Hey guys! I had my transfer advising appointment and here’s what I learned:
Over 50% of transfers submit requests for transfer credit re-evaluation. The admissions team makes a fast pass over your credits and plugs in some of the obvious ones, but you’ll want to submit syllabi for classes you think should transfer. Find their equivalent course by looking carefully at the course catalog. They have some classes that look really similar, so aim for the 200 or higher level course that most closely matches the class you took at your old CC or uni.
Check your transfer credit report a few days after you first see it. Mine actually had some changes!
English 105 is basically unavoidable. I found a professor (last name Olinde) on RateMyProfessors.com that had good reviews. Be careful with who you pick for this class – it seems like some profs are super easy and some are incredibly difficult.
American Sign Language doesn’t transfer as a foreign language. If you are in the same boat, get ready for three semesters of a foreign language. Wooooo.
Hate math? There are tons of classes that qualify as QR/QI without really having to do any math.
Experiential Education (EE) can be fulfilled by the Junior Transfer student success course, EDUC301. This is also three credits! It’s an easy way to earn hours towards EE and your 120 hours needed to graduate.
Declare a minor. It’s only two more classes than you’d need to fulfill the “Supplemental Education” requirement.
All classes that have reserved seats for transfers or freshman become available to EVERYONE on August 1st. So keep an eye out if you can’t get into a class you want but it says there are only open reserved seats.
You should be at 60 units at the end of Spring 2018 (current semester at your CC or uni). That would put you as a junior at UNC in the fall.
Like many of you, I was panicking when I looked at my transfer credit report. I really hope this helps.
For English 105, isn’t there a portfolio you can submit and possibly get credit for it that way? It does seem like a lot to do but if you really don’t want to take English 105 It’s worth not taking the class.

Also i have to agree with everyone about how frustrating the transfer process has been so far. I understand it’s hard for them to get us registered since we are not there in person and we kind of just were rushed into it unlike freshman who are guided every step of the way. I do think they need a better communication system and who we should contact if we are having issues because no one seems to be designated for helping transfers register and the fact that we don’t have advisors makes it really difficult as well.
Also, who do I contact for getting an ovveride in math? I have credit for 231 but I can’t register for Stor 155 because it says I don’t have the prerequisite fulfilled of 110.
@butfirstcoffee how did you register for an advising appointment? I tried doing it today but it wouldn’t let me login through the link because it said I wasn’t a student.
I tried talking to an advisor and didn’t really get a good answer about an important question for me. I will receive an Associate in Science from an NC Community College this May (I finish the credits for the degree this summer before going to UNC). Included on my college transcript are AP classes that transfer based upon my current school’s AP policy. Once I receive my Associate’s, will all credits transfer to at least something at UNC and I should obtain junior status? I know the basics of the CAA, but I’m not sure how AP credit affects my transfer of credits to Carolina. I’m a little worried because if UNC doesn’t transfer my classes as they are on my current transcript, I’ll just be a sophomore with a few extra credits, which is not what I want after completing an in state Associate’s.
I have a similar problem. I was only given placement credit for MATH 110, which is a 0 credit hour version. Here is a link for advising appointments. http://uncadvising.simplybook.me/v2/
@annamanna
I just looked and realied I do have credit for Math 110 on my transfer report but none of my transfer credits are showing up on connect Carolina so the system doesn’t recognize it. Does anyone else have this issue?
Is there an online appointment @HSstudentNC
Nvm got it to work. Anyone who has done an advising appointment know a good advisor to choose?
@HSstudentNC @annamanna the same thing happened to me too
Does anyone know what the SPAN 999 credit on the transfer credit report means?
I think it means you met the high school foreign language requirement with Spanish. Not sure why it is even listed on the credit report. @alliezannino
Since there’s not much I can do till I get my transfer credit report, now I’m wondering to get a meal plan or to not get a meal plan
@AwkwardNewYorker You will probably want a meal plan but do not purchase unlimited as I will tell you, it is a waste of money unless you eat ALL your meals in there. Get the block plan where it comes out to about 1 meal a day in the dining room and then you can put money on your one card for other meals at different places. Plus there are so many good restaurants on Franklin street and in Carbarro.
@Nurse001 I was thinking about getting a block plan because I wanted to at least have an option to get food Incase I’m running low on money. Thanks for the suggestion
@AwkwardNewYorker My son had the 120 block plan so that 1 meal per day for the semister. He usually eats in middle of afternoon and has his big meal. There is a target on Franklin street (walking distance) where you can get stuff for your room (food) like breakfast stuff, snacks, water and such. He usually gets protein bars and pop tarts and such and throws some in his backpack. Then I usually put $100.00 monthly on his one card for him to get snacks and whatever.
For everyone: The one card is your key to get in the door to your resident hall and ID, everyone will get one. You also will need to have money on there for washer and dryer as you have to pay and swipe the card to do laundry. If you don’t bring a printer you get so many swipes on your one card for printer services. It is always good to have money on there so you can go to Starbucks on campus and many other food and snack stuff so you don’t have to carry around cash and other credit cards. If people want to give you a gift for birthdays and Christmas tell them to put money on your onecard It comes in handy!
Also room does not come with frig. My son bought one from a girl that was graduating. Look on Admitted: UNC 2019 to see if anyone is selling one.
Do we get our Onecard during Orientation?
@HSstudentNC Yes, they will take your picture and then you will get it at orientation. What I suggest before you start school add convenience funds to it.
I’m gonna call tomorrow and ask about taking summer classes, then I’m gonna contact financial aid and ask about it. I sent over last years FAFSA like they said. I think taking two prerequisites for my major would really help. On the website it says FA is available. If anyone’s interested I’ll post an update with what they say tomorrow. I know my EFC was a third of what it is now, so hopefully that will be in my favor.
@AwkwardNewYorker does it say the FA is available on the UNC website or on your CC page?
