do i have a chance at getting into unc chapel hill? and what are some tips to improve resume?
*junior- honor roll student every year, out of state
*weighted gpa is about 4.1
*unweighted 3.6
I know this is very low for chapel hill but i go to a very very challenging school, do you think they will care about how hard it is or not really?
*extracurriculars
-varsity lacrosse and varsity field hockey as a freshman (continued field hockey, and let go off lacrosse to start a non-profit organization).
-I am the founder of this organization, and raised over $500,000 for kids with heart issues.
-interning with NSA.
-top goal scorer in county, 8th in state for field hockey
-made the “all county” team
-won 2 “minds in motion” awards (student- athlete awards)
-spanish honor society
-play piano and sing
-i am flying to Cambodia with a group of doctors in my organization to help them out with children that have heart conditions.
officer of a heart club i started in my school (one that supports my organization)
will coach field hockey this spring
-will coach allied softball this spring also
*SAT
1760
( i will keep taking it, hopefully it will go up)
Complications:
freshman year: i went to a private school, and honor courses were considered to be very hard there because they didn’t offer AP, so i only took 2 honors. When i transferred y honors credits didn’t count into my gpa because my new school didn’t offer those classes. I ended up getting all As, 2 B’s, and a C.
sophmore year: 1 regular class, 1 AP class, the rest honors. All As 2 Bs
Junior: 1 regular, 1 AP, the rest honors. will most limey end up being All As and 1 B.
For UNC Chapel Hill, you need almost Ivy league SAT scores, and top tier grades. Your Ec’s are pretty great, but your grades/GPA just don’t cut it for UNC. I’d suggest getting at least a 2000 before you don’t consider it a high reach.
yea i understand. thank you for your honesty. So even if my counselor at my high school explains how difficult our school is you don’t think it will make a difference to admissions? @cferrera13
The issue is not really the GPA but the standardized test scores…there’s an 18% admit rate for OOS students…that’s a tough road ahead…i’d concentrate on that more than the grades…
@onmyway7 I truly don’t know how top tier your school is/how much of a magnet school it may be. That very well could change everything, but at the same time it could change nothing. A magnet school near me, Roxbury Latin I believe, had something around 50% of each class of theirs go to an Ivy, MIT, or Stanford. If your school is on the same level as them, you’ll have no problem; however, I am not you, so I don’t know. Best of luck to you though, and I hope you do get in!
Your GPA wouldn’t be an issue, if your SAT backed that up. I had a student with a 4.0 GPA (4.0 scale) wondering why she didn’t get into Ohio State main campus. She had an 18 ACT. I said, “The discrepancy tells them you go to a school where As are handed out like candy on Halloween” (which is true of that school I used to teach at…). You’ll need better scores, 2100 or better SAT, and I’d say a 34 on the ACT. That will tell them that your GPA reflects a really rigorous program.
