My sister was flying out of town for a two-day full-ride scholarship interview at another college on the day before UNC decisions were supposed to be posted, and when she was at the airport with my mom, she got nervous that something might go wrong with her being able to access Connect Carolina in the dorms at the other college. So she signed on right before the plane was starting to board to show my mom where to go and how to check the acceptance link in case she couldn’t access it. And there it was … the link to the decision letter … a day early. She looked at my mom in shock and said, “What should I do?” because if it was bad news, she didn’t want to fall into a puddle right in the middle of a crowded airport right before they were getting ready to board. My mom said, “It’s up to you,” but before she could finish the sentence, my sister couldn’t take the suspense and hit the link. She didn’t even get past the first line before she burst into tears … so much for being worried about falling into a puddle in a crowded airport, right? But it was a puddle of happiness. She was accepted as an OSS and the rest is history. It was her first choice school, and she’s there now and she loves it. She actually was offered the full ride scholarship at the other college, and still chose UNC. That’s how much she wanted to go there.
Anyway, at least for my sister, decision letters posted a day earlier than she was told they would post. Whichever way it happens for us, we at most only have a few more days to find out! Good luck everyone!
@JLeeC37 where was the link to the admissions decision on the connect Carolina account? Just curious so when decisions do come out I’m looking in the right spot on my account!
@TX2016 When you’re on the Connect Carolina webpage, you scroll all the way down to the bottom where it says “Admission.” Right now, there’s a box that says, “Thank you for submitting your application. Your decision is not yet available.” When decisions are ready, that wording will change to a live link. My sister says that it changed to “Decision” or “Decision Letter” or something like that. She can’t remember exactly, but when you click on that link, the decision letter will pop up on your screen (assuming it works the same as it did for her). She says my page looks exactly like her page looked before she was admitted, so I think it will work the same as it did for her.
@graceann My sister was OOS, so there weren’t many merit options for her other than Robertson, which sent a letter separate from the admission letter. After she was accepted, she received a separate email saying that she was accepted into the Excel@Carolina program and that she had been given a scholarship, but that wasn’t included in the admission letter.
@erin yeager and other UVA/UNC OOS applicants… how do you decide which one if get into both? Curious since dd in state NC and no reason to apply to UVA really IMHO.
@anon145 - Are you asking how do you decide which school to attend if you get into several like UNC, UVA and other elite public? Umm, not really sure, but I can share my plan/rationale. So far I have been accepted to UVA and Michigan and waiting on UNC and William & Mary (as far as public OOS are concerned, about 10 more private), but I do not have a clear cut favorite right now among the public schools. I have visited all and will likely visit all relevant schools again after decisions are complete in late March. Basically, I am planning to see if they still feel as good as they originally did and then compare total cost of attendance of each. Somewhere in there I will make a decision. If I had to pick one public right now, it would be William & Mary if I get in.
thx @karlmarx2020 my DD is in state NC so it wasn’t difficult since cost savings is huge and rankings/ strength in relevant programs is similar. UVA vs UNC would seem like a more difficult decision if out of state for both, so I was curious…
My DD is OOS and was accepted to UVA. If she gets into UNC she said she will probably pick UVA. (If she didn’t get into any of the other private schools she applied to) One for location, another is there are more OOS students so she can meet more ppl from other places and also it is higher ranked and she is stuck on rankings. We are visiting UNC in March so maybe she would change her mind seeing it.
I’m a UVA alum but hoping my SD ends up at her first choice - UNC-CH. (We are NC residents, so the cost/benefit piece of the equation is huge.) Both schools are more alike than they are different. Both have great college town environments, beautiful campuses, and smart kids.
The only “big” difference in my mind is that UVA has full blown engineering and architecture schools, but UNC-CH does not. NC residents have to look to schools such as NC State for an in state engineering/architecture option. For many kids, that difference won’t matter.
yep @DevilStick as best I can tell the major difference is lack of engineering school at UNC. In terms of rankings for individual subjects one school is not consistently ranked “higher”. For example computer science, math, etc… is ranked higher at UNC (for whatever that’s worth). English higher at UVA… There is a lot more fun things available within 30 minutes of chapel hill than charlottesville but maybe that’s a bad thing (as a parent)
