UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

I know everyone’s anxiety but UNC is doing what it had stated i.e. results will be in by 1/31. All of us knew the date when we applied for UNC, lets remember no information from UNC has changed other than all being more on the edge.

…understood @dudefromnowhere, you are correct, but those were indicators…the other EA schools my daughter got into sent out their decisions weeks before the “final date” and have benefited from a visit and chance of my daughter to see their schools and be encouraged to attend there… as my daughter told me, looks like “UNC is a last minute procrastinator”…haha…anyway…Good luck to all, 2-5 more days to go!

Wow. I can’t believe people are actually being critical of the UNC Admissions folks. Like @dudefromnowhere wisely mentioned, you knew what you were getting into when you applied EA to UNC. The timeline for notification has been clearly posted since August. While it is fun to obsess and worry as a group and endure the “suffering” that everyone seems to mention, it is ridiculous that people are being so critical and even indicating that the timing of the notifications may actually affect their decision on where to attend. Good grief people (especially parents), please relax. Enjoy the process, enjoy the countdown and enjoy the suspense as much as you can. As always, good luck to all.

@karlmarx2020 agreed!!! They have an SLA(service level agreement) that so far they have adhered to. Now if applicants don’t hear by 1/31 then folks should be annoyed.

I would disagree on that @karlmarx2020

For each additional acceptance, it gets a little less exciting, for me, where I was initially tied between UNC and UMich when applying, having the Umich acceptance for over a month before UNC gave me time to get excited about Mich and even feel more connected to UofM, if that makes sense.

UNC is doing themselves no favors with yield in taking so long… but that’s nothing for me to worry about. I knew what I was in for when I applied.

My favorite admission by far was Florida State out of the 15 applied to . They gave you an exact date and time and then called by telephone to say congratulations. Nice personal touch
Penn State was rolling admissions - found out 2 weeks later. Very Exciting U Alabama too 2 weeks later.
U Georgia posted every day on their twitter information page and admissions page about admissions to keep you in the loop - loved that. Felt very involved, and kept everyone excited up until the big unveiling. I love it when colleges are organized and enthusiastic about the process

@Nikos87 UNC had 20,000 EA applications. It’s also a poor public school and I believe does not hire temporary
readers like a bunch of other schools do including Ivies that only get ~3-5000 EAs. (which is interesting in itself having temps. evaluate applications) I
think Berkeley hires temps also. Stanford only has one person guaranteed to review an application
unless you are a legacy.
so in that light it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. To be fair if one
considers all that it’s not as bad as it seems.

Also, UNC has a lot more out of state applications than Georgia, and I imagine those are the applications that take all the time since in general the OOS applicants to UNC are insanely good and capped at 18% of total accepted.

@ErenYeager You have good points. I have been accepted to UMich and others as well, and do appreciate their notification coming out as early as it did. I actually wasn’t even paying attention to UMich at the time and found out several days later. With that said, I like that UNC is coming out at this time of year. It kind of fills the gap in between December results and all of the others in mid to late March.

I would be surprised if it has an effect on yield. They have been practicing this method for several years and Universities of this size are typically really good at making adjustments if their practices are resulting in unacceptable yields. Good Luck.

It’s not good or bad. It’s just their schedule is all. File under “is what it is” and move on:)

(I would note Michigan got well more than 20k tho. Could be done. But again, it is their choice of schedule:)

Why do we have to wait til December 25th for Christmas. We know it’s coming and is always on time. Why not celebrate it on the the 22nd? (Tongue firmly placed in cheek)

I can’t help but agree with @ErenYeager. It is quite annoying that DAYS before 1/31, UNC still cannot pinpoint an exact day (not even going to go at exact time) at which decisions will be released. I highly doubt that they are still reviewing applications at this point, so why can’t they just give an exact date? It definitely makes me like UNC less, though I wish it didn’t.

out of state tuition is 10K more per year at U. Michigan vs UNC,
in state is 6K more at U. Michigan vs UNC. if it takes a few weeks more but costs 40K less over 4 years does it matter?

also I think UNCs biggest advantage over michigan is 20 degrees warmer in the winter

Just posted on the ConnectCarolina home page:

Attention Prospective Students: Undergraduate admissions decisions are not currently available. This message will be updated when the decisions are released. (updated 1/27/16, 12 noon)

I still have access to the student center…?

@TX2016 you should still have access

The UNC Admissions Twitter also removed the how it feels to be accepted video. At least, my son doesn’t seen it on his feed. I imagine the office has been swamped with questions about whether acceptances were sent out ever since they posted it!

I tried to find a 2015 or 2016 thread about UNC legacy, but couldn’t find one so I thought someone here might know.

Does legacy have any weight at UNC for OOS students?

Yes, it does. In state, it does not. @jleec37

Connect Carolina has an update that reads “Attention Prospective Students: Undergraduate admissions decisions are not currently available. This message will be updated when the decisions are released. (updated 1/27/16, 12 noon)”

Last year, this same message was posted on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 and EA decisions were released the next day! Hopefully this will work similarly for us!
