UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

But overall UNC is a great school, and their political/social beliefs will only play a small part in my final decision.

I joined in on this thread earlier on, but recently I’ve been creepin’ so I figured I’d say something! Best of luck to everyone!

-Was UNC your first choice? Not initially, but it’s definitely up there right now.
-Will you go? I would love to but it would ultimately come down to money probably.
-What other EA schools did you get into? Spelman, NCAT

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? Maybe - It’s between Spelman and UNC if I get in
-Why yes, why no? I really like UNC’s campus, their traditions, the size, and the fact that it has a great a cappella scene (as well as a lot of other things)
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? Spelman is the most prestigious and rigorous HBCU I applied to and I like the sisterhood and pride that that school has. But we shall see!

This is a great idea! Nice to get information and keep everyone’s minds off the looming decision.
-Was UNC your first choice? Yes, but it will depend on where else I get in
-Will you go? Almost definitely, but it’s pretty expensive because I am OOS
-What other EA schools did you get into? Tulane Honors, UVA, Georgia Honors, UNC Wilmington

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? Yes
-Why yes, why no? I loved UNC when I visited and the academics are great, as is the campus life and atmosphere.
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC?

Good luck to everyone!

@annharv1 Keep in mind that a few students do not represent the university as a whole. There are definitely conservative people at UNC. I’d wager quite a few.

-Was UNC your first choice? No but I do like it
-Will you go? Really depends on the combination of other schools I get into
-What other EA schools did you get into? Only accepted to Villanova early, applied to a bunch RD

  • Which one will you choose? Northwestern is my absolute dream, other favorites are Columbia, GW, Brown, Tufts, BU.
-Why yes, why no? If I don’t get into my top choices, I’d be super happy with UNC because it has a great journalism program. If I do get into my top choices, that’s where I’m going!
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? I just love the other ones I named- Northwestern especially because I love Chicago and Medill (school of journalism) is amazing. There’s nothing wrong with UNC, I just don’t know a lot about it since I’m OOS from CT. I’ll definitely want to learn more if I get in!

-Was UNC your first choice? Yes
-Will you go? 100% yes if I get in
-What other EA schools did you get into? UNCC

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? Definitely UNC.
-Why yes, why no? Whole family has gone to UNC and I’ve loved everything about the school and its history since I was a little kid
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC?
  • Was UNC your first choice? Yes! I applied to some reach schools that I haven't heard from yet, but even so UNC is my number 1
  • Will you go? It all depends on how it works out financially since I am OOS, already have FL prepaid, and am a twin so double the cost
  • What other EA schools did you get into? None, EA for UM has not come out yet
  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? If I get into UNC, I will choose it over UM
  • Why yes, why no? I love NC and the pre-med program is amazing
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? UF is probably my top at the moment just because of FL prepaid and bright futures

Good Luck everyone and hopefully you will be getting more sleep than I will be getting tonight! (HW and procrastination kills)

-Was UNC your first choice? No
-Will you go? Probably not
-What other EA schools did you get into? Ohio State, Miami (Ohio), UVa

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? Probably either OSU or one of my RD schools, but I would consider UNC if I get a scholarship
-Why yes, why no? I’m OOS so tuition is expensive and I have a lot of other good options
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? Reputation, cost, I didn’t necessarily love UNC’s campus either

Does anyone know UNC’s policy on switching between schools within the university? I think I’d want to do that if I were to go, and with some schools you apply directly to a specific school while others you decide what school to enroll in once you’re accepted. Obviously it’s a little premature since we haven’t gotten in yet but I’m just curious!

-Was UNC your first choice? Yes, Dream school since I was in middle school
-Will you go? Definitely, if I get in
-What other EA schools did you get into? Penn State and Stony Brook University

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? UNC
-Why yes, why no? UNC has a great med program and its cheap (instate)

All these people like oh I don’t even know why I applied to UNC it’s my last choice. If so many people don’t even care about UNC the anxiety level on this thread should be a lot lower.

For me it’s tied for first.

@zoomloom what are the dates and times for?

@TX2016 Those appear to be when the decisions were released in the past.

@ErenYeager I get what you mean (I’m one of the ones who isn’t totally in love with UNC) but I think even if people don’t super love the school, the anxiety starts to hella build up. Plus having options is good, and it would be nice to have a good school to think about until March!

-Was UNC your first choice? It depends on what merit/financial offers I get, but I love it.
-Will you go? Same as above
-What other EA schools did you get into? UVA, Boston college

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? Maybe
-Why yes, why no? See #1
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? I applied for merit everywhere, now I’m just waiting to see what happens

@annharv1 Typically, most college campuses will be liberal. However, UNC is actually more moderate than most elite college campuses, especially the public ones. Berkeley, for example, is extremely liberal. Same with Brown, Swarthemore, UChicago, Columbia, and a lot more. UNC is probably one of the most moderate top campuses in the nation.

Well it looks like I’m not going to be paying attention in class tomorrow and instead Ill be pressing refresh on my connect carolina account [-O<

  • Was UNC your first choice? - UNC and Georgetown are both my top choices. No idea what I do if I get in to both.
  • Will you go? - Depends if I get in to Georgetown, and if they give me any sort of scholarship/financial aid.
  • What other EA schools did you get into? - None - got deferred at Georgetown.
  • Which one will you choose? - No idea. Most likely UNC because it will be cheaper.
  • Why yes, why no? - What's not to love? My friend lived in Chapel Hill so I got to experience the town as well as take a college tour. I was sold.
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? - My brother goes to Georgetown, so I have seen the student side of that school and already know that I love it there.

-Was UNC your first choice? Sort of. Yale was my dream school, but truly Carolina was my most likely top choice. Since Yale rejected me Carolina definitely is now my top choice.

-Will you go? Probably unless one of the other colleges I applied to offers me something I can’t turn down.
-What other EA schools did you get into? Didn’t apply to any other EA schools, but Yale turned me down SCEA.

  • Which one will you choose? Will it be UNC? See above.
-Why yes, why no? Carolina offers one of the best, if not the best, undergraduate journalism program in the country, it has a vibrant social scene and a rigorous academic climate, it’s campus is beautiful, it offers all the extracurriculars I could ever dream of, it’s in state, it has history and culture and it is overall one of the best colleges in this country.
  • If no, what did the other schools have over UNC? Other schools have the higher level prestige but that’s about it.
