UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

Someone on Twitter just said their school counselor confirmed decisions are being released today!

@ElleWoods2020 I am rooting for you. Hope you get in!

“Casually” refreshing the ConnectCarolina portal in Anatomy & Physiology…

I saw this posted on FB. Don’t freak out…They expect to enroll 4100 out of 36,000 applications but their yield isn’t that high, so there will a many more acceptances.

~~ The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has set an 11th consecutive record for first-year applications – an increase of 12 percent over last year and the second largest increase within the last 25 years.

As of Jan. 25, Carolina’s 35,748 first-year applicants come from all 100 counties in North Carolina, all 50 states and the District of Columbia and 124 countries outside the United States. At least 11,307 of the applicants are North Carolina residents, which is an increase of 10 percent over last year. Applications from global students total 3,778 and reflect an increase of 19 percent over last year.

“We continue to be grateful that so many terrific students are considering us for the next step in their academic journeys,” said Stephen Farmer, Vice Provost for Enrollment and Undergraduate Admissions. “Their interest in Carolina reinforces our commitment to treating each applicant with the greatest of care and respect.”

Applicants from low-income households, as indicated by their qualification for an application fee waiver, rose from 3,488 to 4,409, an increase of 26 percent. The fee-waiver guidelines roughly parallel the thresholds for the Carolina Covenant, the University’s groundbreaking program that promises a debt-free education to all eligible admitted students who apply for aid on time.

For the past two years, Covenant Scholars comprised 13 percent of the enrolling class. The University also received 5,764 applications from first-generation-college students, which is an increase of 15 percent over last year.

Students who applied in October will receive their decisions by the end of January. Students who applied in January will receive their decisions by the end of March.

The University expects to enroll a first-year class of 4,100. ~~

Does anyone have stats for EA or was that article referencing EA?

Overall, it looks like UNC will have a 23-26% acceptance rate this year, but that breaks into a 60-66% acceptance rate for NC students and only 6-7% rate for out-of-state students. Can that possibly be true?

Inputs: 4,100 freshman class (of which 82% will be NC students), 35,748 applicants (of which 11,307 are in-state), and 45-50% overall yield rate.

I invite you to check my math because that differential looks crazy. One potential flaw is applying the same yield rate across both populations. It could be that the yield rate for NC students is way the heck higher than out-of-state. Thoughts?

Stats for EA applications by itself are here:

Is 4100 equal, more, or less than usual?

24 more than last year’s enrollment of 4076.

^ This website says acceptance rate was 30% overall, 52% for NC residents, and 19% for out of state applicants.

Does yield mean the number accepted or the number who will enroll? Sorry… I don’t really understand the terminology.

In this context, yield is the percentage of accepted students who actually enroll and attend.

So there will be more than 4100 people accepted right? I mean, no school has a 100% matriculation rate.

what do yall think the EA acceptance rate is? What about instate acceptance rate?

Wow! This is so exciting. I remember this day last year when my son found out his early action decision. I think we must have refreshed the Connect Carolina webpage and College Confidential page a hundred times. He was so excited (and relieved) when he got accepted. We weren’t sure at the time if he would attend or not because he had several regular decision applications out there but we were thrilled to have such a quality option. Ultimately, he ended up attending UNC and he couldn’t be happier! He is a Biomedical Engineering student and while the curriculum is difficult, he has been so impressed with the intelligence levels of the students - he says everyone is smart, everyone is nice and goes out of their way to help each other out and he is thoroughly enjoying being a college student and going to football and basketball games, cocktails and everything on Franklin St. Best of luck to all of you!!! I hope you enjoy your college career wherever you end up attending.

Correct, between EA and RD they will probably accept about 9500, maybe more.
