UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

Hi everyone!

Carolina just released a post saying that they had a record breaking 35,748 applicants this year, 11,307 of which are from NC. For fellow OOS applicants like me, it’s a terrifying proportion when those 11,000 in-staters WAY outnumber us.

So, here is an open letter to all OOS students on this thread:

If you got accepted today: CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE AN AMAZING PERSON AND I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU. Seriously. You should feel so proud of your accomplishments, because this is not an easy thing. You must have worked hard throughout high school, and even if you don’t attend UNC, your hard work has more than paid off. I bet you are kind, wonderful people and my heart is full of happiness for you all.

If you got deferred today: I feel your pain. However, just because you’re deferred doesn’t mean you’re out of the game! UNC saw something in you that kept them from giving up on you, and that’s pretty awesome. (Even though you don’t need some admission officer’s opinion to know how wonderful you are.) If you really want to go to UNC, keep your chin up and be positive about RD decisions. If you’ve moved past it, good for you, and you can walk away from your application knowing that you did a pretty great job.

If you got rejected today: You are a smart, independent human who don’t need no UNC. With numbers like the ones above, it gets to a point where deciding who’s qualified and who isn’t is so subjective that it’s not even worth stressing out over. You may be sad, and if you are, it’s okay. Eat some ice cream, wear some fuzzy socks, and avoid doing your English homework to watch some Netflix. It’s okay to be disappointed, but it is never the end of the world and this will NEVER reflect poorly on you and your ability to succeed in life. Some of you have already been accepted to amazing schools and have amazing opportunities already, so go take those. You all have the potential to be amazing, even without UNC.

Insert sappy line about how everyone is gonna end up where they’re supposed to be and all that jazz

I hope everyone has a great weekend and a great future! xoxo

Alright…I am pretty disappointed, but I still have a chance

I was deferred Princeton SCEA, so my spirits were down. However, I’ve gotten accepted into 3 amazing schools thus far (UNC, Tulane, and UVa), so honestly I am honored and humbled, and cannot wait to see what the future holds! Also, for future applicants, I was in your shoes, comparing my stats to everyone else’s, but I later realized that you can’t spend your entire life comparing yourself to others, nor can you gage your chances based on someone else’s life (as it’s an incomplete view into a holistic process), nor can you determine your self-worth based off the school you get into. Just revise your essays 132958236579x and make it true to yourself, participate in activities you’re passionate about, and do the best you can do. It’ll pay off eventually.

Accepted OOS!!! Incredibly blessed and now I just need $$$ so we’ll see. Do you guys know how they do roommates? Is it randomized or can you choose?

Yeah out of state is very tough, way to not let it discourage you! I applied regular decision instate… I’m nervous

Deferred OOS. 35 ACT, NMSF (most likely finalist), great essays, etc.

Already been accepted EA to Northeastern and to USC with scholarship.

I knew OOS was selective but I’m more than a little surprised with the amount of amazing applicants being deffered this year.

Congrats to everyone who did get in.

@jzliao
I’m very excited for you!! I know it stinks to get all those early deferrals, and I think this just proves that all it means it that there is a place where everyone fits in. They know their school better than you, and UNC said “you belong here”! Good for you!!

For those disappointed who already got an early acceptance from UVa or Michigan or Princeton(!), well, your school already claimed you as their fit:). So be happy and see how it all shakes out. It’s not about racking up acceptances. It’s about finding your place…

And…anyone who says they are “confused” about being deferred bc they were accepted to both Mich and UVa needs to get a grip and some perspective. Please stop posting those kinds of things. Do you know how many kids are still waiting for even ONE email to start with “It is with great pleasure”, “You’re in” or "“Congratulations”?

Humility is a great thing to have…empathy is even better.

@HRSMom Thank you for saying that. Especially the last part about the wait. Honestly, one of the reasons I dislike College Confidential is because of how entitled so many act on here. I feel happy for my friends who were accepted, but it irritates me when people act like the world is over when they already have acceptances to other great universities and I don’t have an acceptance to ONE university and THREE deferrals.

@HRSMom Thank you!! And I totally agree with what you said.

@HRSMom Yes, thank you for the reality check. Some on CC fret because they got into Princeton but not UNC (or UVA or UMich). I think the ego is bruised because if Princeton can see me as great then why not others …

Rejoice your Wins! and feel happy for others wins too

"And…anyone who says they are “confused” about being deferred bc they were accepted to both Mich and UVa needs to get a grip and some perspective. "

it makes sense that UNC is more selective for OOS than U Michigan or UVA. They are all great schools and will rank differently than each other based on the major/department. UM takes twice the percentage of overseas (full tuition) kids as the other schools and has the largest class size. UNC because of the OOS cap at 18% takes many fewer kids OOS than the other schools. The reason Cornell is much easier to get into the other Ivies is strictly due to having much bigger class sizes. Cornell is actually a lot better in computer science and engineering than many other ivies that are much harder to get in to.

Accepted instate!
Homeschooled: 31 ACT
SAT II: 780 Lit, 750 Math 2, 680 Bio-M
7 AP classes
Loads of extracurriculars and leadership experience…

Congrats to everyone who got in!

Question - what does it mean to “accept” your admission? Does that mean you are committing to UNC?

Yeah- it means you’re accepting your place aka committing

@DevilStick, great New Yorker article. After reading it, I am even happier that my daughter didn’t apply to any of the Ivies.

I agree with you, college costs and affordability should be towards the top of importance in any discussion about which college admission to accept. If a student is motivated, he can get a good education wherever he lands.

@DevilStick I think the person going to UM instead of UNC instate for business is making a financial mistake unless they are richie rich. Ask parents for a new car instead… and put the rest int he bank…

Accepted OOS! Loads of extracurricular activities and great recommendations; just waiting for scholarships because UNC is a little bit expensive though.
