Has anyone ever received any sort of letter or advertisement in the mail from UNC? A lot of other schools always send me mail and I've never gotten any paper mail from UNC, even after applying to their school, and it worries me.

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same predicament.

Budget cuts impact many things, including recruitment activities. Admission to UNC is highly sought and very competitive and fortunately has been able to show sustained growth even in difficult economic times.

Don’t let a lack of marketing efforts concern you. The biggest marketers are private schools who charge a lot more for tuition with the single biggest marketer being WUSTL (Washington University in St Louis) who has taken it to a whole new level. It drives application revenue and back in the day also impacted their USNWR ratings because it made them look more selective.

Nothing to worry about here. Be glad that UNC is saving their money for important things like keeping tuition down and faculty retention up.

Yeah, I think I got one or two mailings from UNC, but I think one was just after I visited and the other was just after I applied. I’d much rather that approach than the mass mailings of WUSTL and UChicago.

I’ve gotten some nice mailings from them and I’ve never visited. Full-color cardstock brochures…classy. They also came before I applied.
I’m not the most competitive applicant in the world, so perhaps they simply wanted my application fee. Hahaha.

The mailings from WUSTL and U Chicago (and others) are generated by high SAT scores and in some cases whether or not you checked the box saying you’d like receiving them when you took your SAT.

I received mail from them about 3 times before I applied. They sent me mail two more times after I applied. Also they still consistently send me emails. Sometimes I wonder if they even have my application.lol. but they do :D

@Gms, oh my gosh I get SO many emails from them. “Consider Carolina!” I did. Already applied.

I’m OOS - IL. On the back of one of the mailings they sent me, it said they printed 70,000 of them… I honestly don’t know who the other 69,999 went to.

Ahhh I see. Well my stats aren’t really that impressive so I can’t be surprised that I wasn’t part of that 70,000.

Well anyways, thank you for your response. I’m happy that they have interest in you! Hopefully i will see you posting in the Early Action 2016 thread when someone makes one (^.^)

UNC doesn’t do notifications until January for one main reason:

Most of the people applying are in-state, and for many, UNC is a reach or match and not a safety. That way, in-state applicants are inclined to spend more money applying to other in-state schools with deadlines of January 1st. If they knew of acceptance beforehand, they would not spend time and money applying to other UNC system schools. It’s just a way to make more money for the state. Smart, huh?

@LovesBrown: Exactly! I always get emails from UNC with these consider UNC ones!! I always think that these are emails that are talking about updates in my account…but no.lol.

And yes I am in-state…sorry for my lateness.

UNC doesn’t send out “likely letters” any more- they stopped a couple of years ago. It’s tough, but just be patient until January. And don’t expect to hear before 5:00 on the day they say they will notify you. Kids stayed up all night last year just waiting because they expected it to go on-line right after midnight, but no, it was 5:01 on Friday afternoon before the results were posted. Expect the site to crash when they are posted because thousands are trying to access it at once. We were lucky enough to get right on, but others tried for several hours before having success. Good luck!
