UNC meeting only 50% of need?

Just received my Financial Aid this morning and I was surprised. It lists my Estimated Need as 35,538.00 but they only offered a package totaling 18,312.00. There's no way my family can afford that. It has been listed multiple times by UNC that they meet 100% of demonstrated need as long as forms are submitted on time. I tried calling in but no one will pick up even after an hour. Panicking since there's only a few days left to decide. Anyone have a similar issue or know of what to do?

Did they only give you $18k in grants and the rest in loans or is your entire package $18k?

Edit: And what do you mean your estimated need is 35k? Your EFC is the amount you and your parents are expected to contribute, so I’m not sure how you would get that number? (Do you have a 0 EFC and UNC is saying that you need $35k per year to come as an out-of-stater?)

They gave me 8k in grants, the rest in loans. So the entire package is only 18k or half my need. Sorry if that sounded confusing, the Family Contribution that UNC listed was about $5100 or so. They listed the money I need as $35,500 or so.

Haven’t received any aid yet but what they gave you is ridiculous! With you EFC so low I’d imagine you should have gotten more. Perhaps there was something on your CSS Profile that made them reconsider.

It could possibly just be a computer or entry error. It seems odd I got very close to exactly 50% of demonstrated need. But if there were something on the CSS that changed things, they would’ve changed my EFC. Under the Need Calculation Summary, this is listed:

Estimated Financial Aid Budget
41,140.00
Expected Family Contribution
5,602.00
Estimated Need
35,538.00
Total Aid
18,312.00

Considering the Office closes on weekends, if I don’t get this resolved by Friday, I’m gonna be in a tough spot.

That’s very strange – UNC does have a policy of meeting 100% of need for all accepted US citizens who apply on time. I would call again.

Are you sure you weren’t looking at your aid for only the Fall semester, and not the whole year? That would explain why its half
