UNC or NC State?

I've already been accepted to UNC so I can only assume I will also be accepted to NC State. I seem to be having a hard time deciding which one to attend (assuming I do get accepted to NC State, of course).

Some background info:

I'm a 25 year old female and am graduating with my associate's degree over the summer and am planning to transfer for the fall 2013 semester.

I served 4 years in the military and am using my GI Bill for tuition, if that makes any difference.

I have been going to Cape Fear Community College for a year and a half so I'm very used to a small school. I am aware that both these schools are large and this concerns me somewhat. I'm easily intimidated.

I'm an English major with plans to obtain a master's degree in Library Science (probably also at UNC).

I have a 3.9 GPA, mostly because I'm a good at test taking and last-minute essays. I tend to procrastinate, especially with reading, so I am dreading going to more difficult classes after getting so used to my community college.

UNC will be about an hour commute for the first 6-9 months due to my living situation. NC state will be about a 30-40 minute commute. After that I'll be moving to whatever town my school is in.

Please help me out with some pros and cons so I can make a decision! Thank you!

Since they are both similar prices, size and atmosphere (mostly) I would focus on the major you will be in. And since UNC has a library science school, UNC would probably be a better fit.

lol are you serious? if you’re not paying for tuition why would you ever pick NC state. chapel hill is a nationally renowned university, and NC state is… well… it’s not good.

I agree UNC. If you were going for Engineering ok state but it’s a no contest, UNC is much more exclusive.

Congratulations on your acceptance to UNC. That is quite an accomplishment!

State bashing, really? NC State actually has a very good English Department (especially in Creative Writing) as does UNC. Both programs are fairly large within the Universities. My daughter’s roommate in an English major at UNC and one her best friends is at NC State. Both schools offer good experiences and are very good values. Carolina is ranked higher but you can get a terrific education at either.

UNC has one of the top Library Science programs in the country, however, which will figure in to your decision. I have a friend who recently completed his Masters degree there and said it was exceptional. Of course a Bachelors degree from State and a Masters from Carolina looks good too.

Visit the schools and see where you think you will fit in best. Although the Universities are large (UNC) and larger (NC State), as a CC transfer you will be slotting into smaller classes and should feel secure at either. NC State is spread out quite a bit but the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) is ideally located on the prettiest part of their campus.

I’d say for the humanities, combined with the bigger name, UNC. Getting to know the profs might help you get into their library science grad program too.

Given your interest in Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill would be a natural fit.
