Thought I’d start this since the transfer application comes out in a week. Good luck to everyone! Post stats, questions, etc. if you want.
I’m at CCCC with 40 credits down and 20 to go. Sitting at a 3.87 GPA and plan on enrolling in the European Studies program. Fingers crossed I get in because I’m 38 and can’t pick up the family to go to another school. Ergo, no plan B.
@Mcunn226 I hope you get in too! I know there have been some students in similar situations who ended up getting in. Your stats are definitely good enough to get in! It’s also good that we aren’t OOS.
My stats are:
I am enrolled at an NC community college, I have a 3.667 GPA, and I will have 64 credits by mid-December, so hopefully I can bring my GPA up even more. I’ve done a good amount of volunteering, participated in a club, and I am a children’s small group leader at my church. Most of my family attended UNC, and my grandmother taught there, so hopefully that will help. Looking forward to seeing the outcome!
@transferluk: From what I’ve read it should be good enough to get in as a junior transfer but in some of the other threads it looks like there’s a certain level of randomness to it (at least with the information provided to the forum here). Some transfer students with better stats have been waitlisted or outright denied but they might have been incoming sophomore transfers.
It’s also hard for me to gauge my own standing since many younger transfers are coming in with SAT/ACT scores (mine are literally 20 years old), AP courses that bump up their GPA (AP courses weren’t really a thing in the 90s), or tons of extracurriculars (I work full time with a family, so no debate club for me) .
@Mcunn226 Yeah, there does seem to be randomness to the whole process. They’ve taken people with lower GPA’s in the past and rejected some with perfect stats. This really shows that applicants need to be the right fit for their institution and the type of student that they are seeking in order to get accepted, which varies from year to year. I know it is much more competitive to get in as a sophomore.
I think it comes down to your personality; they want to know who you are as a person and what you could bring to campus. They want to see your unique perspective, but it can be hard to make yourself stand out. You really do have to sell yourself in a way. Anyway, I think I will be more competitive if I can finish strong this semester and bring my GPA up.
Also I think they can waive the test scores for non-traditional students, so I wouldn’t worry about that.
@Mcunn226 European Studies sounds like an interesting major! What made you choose it and what do you want to do with it?
I’d like to either work in Europe or in DC in the European Affairs office of an agency - possibly even State Department. I’ve always been a huge Europhile and the program seems tailored made for me.
@Mcunn226 That sounds like a cool job! I’ve always wanted to travel to Europe. I hope it will work out for you. I think I want to double major in communications and sociology or psychology.
I’ve been in communications for most of my adult life (radio, NASA Television, but now real estate marketing), so it’s a fun business.
@Mcunn226 It does sound like a fun business! I like how the degree is versatile for most jobs. I’m actually interested in real estate. My mom is a realtor, so hopefully I will be able to learn more about real estate through her.
Hi,
I’m excited to see a thread for this. I will have a 3.7 by the end of the semester, and over 200 volunteer hours. My SAT is a 1500.
Do our high school stats (GPA, class rank, ECs) really even matter that much when applying as a sophomore transfer?
@hopefullyinnyc your stats look amazing, good luck!
@bearsandcubs17 they probably matter more than if you were applying as a junior transfer, because you still have to send in your standardized test scores. Typically, if you’ve been out of high school for awhile, they would focus more on your college record, but if you’ve only been in college for a couple of semesters, than your high school record will still be a factor.
Hey y’all! This is my 3rd time applying to Chapel Hill, so I’m really not getting my hopes up. I applied to transfer last year as a sophomore transfer and was waitlisted, then ultimately denied.
Current school: UNC Greensboro
Major: English
GPA: 3.97
Number of credits: 39 with 15 in progress
Extracurriculars: a national honor society, Classical Society, and an on-campus job as a tour guide
Good luck on your applications everyone!!
Heyo I am applying to transfer to UNC for Fall 2019!
I was wondering if anyone could try and chance me as well as offer advice on what I can do with the time I have left to improve my application!
Here are my stats:
Freshman year (UNCW)
GPA: 3.747
Current School: NC State
GPA: Fairly confident it will be somewhere between 3.7-3.85. My GPA reset here since I transferred.
Major: Computer Science
Applying as a Junior transfer I will have 63 by the time I attend (if I do) UNC.
In state
EC: Asian student association, Vietnamese student association, volunteering, charity work in Vietnam over summers.
I will basically be sending in two GPA’s since NC State made me start off with a new gpa. I also know high school won’t be as important since I’m applying as a Junior but I do have a very good upward trend on my high school transcript. Went from a 2.3 UW and 2.4 W after my sophomore year (bad decisions when I was younger lol) to a 3.3 UW and a 3.9 W with 7 AP’s.
Also how important do you guys think recommendation letters are? I have yet to know any of my professors well since I am new to State.
Hey everyone, I transferred to Carolina this fall (2018) from an in-state community college. If you have any questions about the process of transferring, want to know my stats, the holistic admissions process, or my experience as a Carolina transfer so far, private message me or @ me here. I’ll do my best to help you where I can.
@HazelPrine I personally don’t think that the recommendations are too important to the application since they only require one! Are there any professors from your freshman year that you could ask for a recommendation?
@csmith55 There are two but I don’t think I knew them well enough for a great recommendation or anything like that, it would just be the typical “good student,” recc you’d expect haha. I think I am just going to try and get to know one of this semesters professors better.
In case anyone was wondering the fall ‘18 UNC admissions stats (including transfers), you can google “UNC class profile” and it should be the first link.
