Going to need more specifics. Trying to transfer with a 2.5? Probably not. 3.7? All other things being equal - sure.
@Mcunn226 Do you think UNC places more emphasis on test scores than a decent ish GPA? UW GPA 3.8, ACT 28. R, E, S = low 30’s, M = 20. Major isn’t math heavy, there’s probably some economics math involved but I seem to handle that fairly well. Geometry, Calculus, Trigonometry, all the nopes. OOS in CA if that makes a difference.
Just curious. Thank you
Being out of state makes an enormous difference. UNC’s acceptance rate is in line with the Ivies for OOS and are next to impossible to chance.
Incoming OOS students had a middle 50% 1360-1500 SAT (29-33 ACT) and 45% of the entire class were in their schools top 10 students. 78% were in their classes top 10%.
For OOS, UNC puts an emphasis on everything since they can only have 18% of the class from outside NC.
@Mcunn226 sheesh, dash all my hopes and dreams before coffee why don’t you. ? I kid. Fully aware the odds are stacked against me and prepared for rejections from just about everywhere. Tiny shred of hope but have to be realistic. There’s always grad school. Appreciate the honesty.
@Mcunn226 what if it is higher than 2.7 but lower than 3.7? I talked to a unc person and someone who got in to UNC as a transfer student and they told me that even if my GPA is like that, it is part of the application and that they still consider other parts. They told me that I shouldn’t be too worry if my GPA is not in the average GPA for transfer students. In a sense, I do feel that GPA counts heavily on the application even though they said it is okay.
I take back what I said about OOS - forgot I was in the transfer thread. My apologies for dashing!
So, here’s the deal. If you transfer for your sophomore year, you’re weighed about as you would for high school but your college grades can help offset lower hs gpa. If you’re coming in as a junior you don’t even have to submit act/sat (I didn’t). UNC. Is all about looking at you as a whole package. What’s your story? My essay and recommendation helped overcome bad grades when I was younger.
The scatter for transfer GPA last year was all over the place. There’s no formula. 3.3 got in but 4.0 didn’t.
@Mcunn226 Unfortunately, I didn’t realize ACT wasn’t required for UNC CH until after I’d added them to the list of schools who received scores. Kind of been winging it through this whole process. Wasn’t at all familiar with various requirements and documents needed, counselors seemed to be more clueless than I so not much help there either.
As far as my story - First essay emphasized how various life experiences helped me realize education is my key to a better quality of life. Raised by cocaine addicts, one with a volatile temper, school wasn’t high on the priority list compared to survival and escaping that environment. (briefly stated, two sentences total) Focused more so on growth, CH organizations and opportunities I plan to utilize and ways I’d like to use my degree to help underserved populations.
Second essay talked about personal experience with the CA housing crisis, details regarding contributing zoning policies, current Governors efforts and changes I hope to see. CA is great, if you can afford it. Millions of us simply can’t at this point. There are roughly 5.4 jobs for every single unit of housing built here. 45% of my check now goes toward rent, 18% is snatched by taxes and I get by on whats left.
I wish my story was unique but its more of the norm where I come from and that is a major part of the problem. idk if the essays helped or hurt, two professors thought they were great but that doesn’t mean admissions reps will feel the same. ??♀️
Hello all -
I’m applying as a Junior Transfer from Syracuse University. I’m a dual-enrolled student in SU’s Whitman School of Management and Newhouse School of Public Communications. My GPA is a 3.81, and I have a 31 ACT/1380 SAT.
I was admitted to UNC as a transfer student around this time last year, however things did not quite line up for me. It was not a good decision for me financially at the time, and I want to be in the UBP at Kenan-Flagler. Being a sophomore last year, I had wasn’t allowed to apply to the B-School and had to run the risk of not being admitted once I had already transferred.
Thus, I am still in New York but this time I have applied to the UBP. I’m not sure what my decision will be this time around. My grades have improved this year, however I struggled with the program’s video essay. I am also unsure of the strength of my letter of recommendation in addition to my other essays. I used some recurring themes from the essays that granted me admission last year, which could or could not be detrimental to my application. I guess that depends on whether or not the university still has my application from last year to look back upon.
There’s a good chance I’m just overthinking it, but that’s what happens in this part of the process. Being quarantined inside also doesn’t help. Either way, I’m happy to again be a part of one of these threads! Applying to college is very exciting, no matter how agonizing the wait for decisions is. Be patient all, yours will come! Wishing the best of luck to all.
P.s. @Mcunn226 good to see you here again! It feels like deja vu. I hope classes are going well and you’re enjoying the sunny weather in Chapel Hill! Maybe I will have the chance to join you there soon.
Is checking portals daily normal? Logically I know its way too early for decisions but I’ve gotten into a habit of checking them every morning.
UNC gave me a mini heart attack yesterday. Top message and checklist had disappeared. ? Logged in ten minutes later and it was back so pretty sure that wasn’t a sign of anything.
Hope the rest of you are staying safe!
This is my first time posting to the forum but I’ve been reading the posts
I have been so nervous, I’ve been checking my portal everyday. Im trying to stay optimistic but at the same time I’m really doubting my chances. Im just trusting that my faith will carry me through. I hope everyone else is doing well and staying positive!
So would you basically say that if you applied for transfer and you’re an in-state resident and go to a college in North Carolina then you might have a higher chance of getting in? Don’t know if you can answer just thought I’d ask
They’re prone to favor in state students, with out of state its a bit more competitive. Still competitive for in-state however.
@reidtw Also in similar situation applying to business school as a junior transfer. I’m applying from Elon University as an in-state resident. I have no idea if it is more competitive to get into B school as a junior transfer. And you’re right - that video essay gave me terrible anxiety. We tried the best we could! Hang in there!
@Lfriel hey! In terms of transfer competitiveness, junior year is most likely the most competitive to get into the b-school. KF doesn’t allow incoming sophomore transfers to apply, and I doubt there is a high number of rising seniors that want to transfer schools that far into undergrad. Thus, most transfers applying to the b-school are like us- Junior transfers. I don’t know what that will mean for us, because it all depends on the strength of the applicant pool. Nothing we can do from here on out though, aside from being patient and trusting things will work out!
lol is anyone else insanely nervous. It has been a very stressful month
@Bettane123 yep! Plus going a little stir crazy from a shelter in place order. Hoping UNC decisions come out on the 6th.
why do you think they’ll come out on the 6th?
Hope. No concrete reason. Noticed last years transfer decision was on a Monday roughly two weeks after regular decision. Could be totally wrong.
What other schools did you guys apply to?
@Bettane123 I’m an NC resident so I applied to mostly NC schools. UNC, NC State, Appalachian State and Campbell. Out of State I applied to Baylor, TCU, and Stetson. So far I’ve been accepted at App State, Campbell (28k per year scholarship) and Baylor (13k per year scholarship) Still waiting on the others.
