UNC2022 Orientation Advice?

Daughter just signed up for Orientation session in June? Any advice from those of you who’ve been to a UNC orientation in previous years? Is there anything we should do before going to get the most out of her session? Thanks in advance!

Do they still do course regristration during orientation? If so, make sure you daughter does the training and has a good list of 25-30 courses she is interested in.

Yes, I believe course registration will occur during orientation. My daughter will be majoring in Neuroscience- it is a new major (previously available as a minor only). i’ll ask her to take a look at current courses.

@noname, no it doesn’t look like they do class registration during orientation. Each orientation session corresponds with a registration period at a later date in which the student will go online and register for classes. For example, if your orientation dates are June 4-5 then your registration window is July 11-12th.

Bring comfortable walking shoes.

Didn’t realize this, you’re right! Thanks!!

@drdj: A couple of other thoughts for orientation:

(1) Make your hotel/luncheon/activity reservations now for Family Weekend 2018, https://nsfp.unc.edu/families/carolina-family-weekend; although the good hotel spaces will likely already be booked, as Family Weekend always coincides with a home football game. Don’t wait until orientation to make your reservations.

(2) During the multiple sessions that parents can go to, my spouse and I skipped some and went to visit the offices of various university services to ask questions about things that were important to us, such how to pay tuition/fees or for housing, finding out more specifics about residence hall options, getting into Honors Carolina after matriculation, student research/internship options, study abroad, etc. So, for example, at one point we went over to the University Cashier’s office to speak to someone about getting payment notices for tuition, etc.; at another time we went and talked with the coordinator for Honors Carolina. The staff were generally willing to talk to us; so don’t hesitate to take the bull by the horns, and go and ask questions while you are there. The scheduled activities and sessions we found to be mostly helpful; but you can really attend (or not) whatever you want.

WARNING: If your child is 18 or older, the university staff will not talk with you about many things, because your child is a legal adult under North Carolina law. So, you will need for your child to do some (if not many) of the things that you might want to do (such as getting notice of when and how tuition payments need to be made; or waiving the cost of university health insurance if your child will be covered by your own health insurance policy – UNC-CH will charge you the cost of the university health insurance, and you have to take affirmative action to opt out). Some of these financial matters can be addressed by you/your child on the link to the University Cashier’s office, here, https://cashier.unc.edu/student-account-policies/new-students/; but if you have any questions, go and talk to someone in that office. Also, as a heads up, UNC-CH student health will not talk to you – probably due to HIPAA – about anything relating to medical/psychological treatment provided to your child by UNC-CH, if your child is 18 or older.
