Undergraduate Studies (UGS)

Who has to take an undergraduate studies class (UGS)? I will be an entering freshman this fall. Also, what majors do not have to take it? I will be a natural science major (either biology or chemistry but right now I am undecided but I will still be in the College of Natural Sciences). Will I have to take a UGS class?

Yes, every entering freshman has to take one, I have to take it in the spring because i can’t get it to fit…oh well

Are you sure all incoming freshman have to take it? I will be in the College of Natural Sciences (Bachelors in science degree).

[Signature Courses | School of Undergraduate Studies](<a href=“Signature Courses | TEXAS Undergraduate Studies”>Signature Courses | TEXAS Undergraduate Studies)

When I ordered the undergraduate catalog this summer, UT sent me the 2008-2010 one. So from nerd855’s link, you don’t have to take a signature course. I am in engineering and during orientation, when we were in our separate school groups, they did not ever mention having to take signature courses. Neither did my advisor.

From their website:

Though all students planning to graduate under the 2010-2012 Undergraduate Catalog or later will be required to complete a First-Year Signature Course, students planning to graduate under the 2008-2010 Undergraduate Catalog are only required to complete the course if they are earning a degree from one of the following colleges:

School of Architecture
Red McCombs School of Business
College of Communication
College of Education
Jackson School of Geosciences
College of Liberal Arts
School of Nursing

My friends in nat sci say you don’t have to take it.

But ask your advisor because a lot of things have been changing for this coming fall.

it was my understanding that the UGS requirement was necessary to complete the University of Texas required credits. That being said, I thought all students had to take one.

Some colleges didn’t have to take it.
Like nat sci and engineering.

They are changing it so that everyone has to take it but I dunno when that starts.

I dont understand what these UGS classes are or why we have to take them. i mean i signed up to take a class called “hard choices” and i have no idea what kind of stuff they do in these classes haha

Look on the UGS site, there are descriptions of what the classes are about.

Also when I went to orientation they gave us a booklet of the ugs classes that stated what they were about.

“Professor Jefferey Abramson
Hard Choices
Through the study of select actual and hypothetical cases, this course seeks to illuminate the fundamental moral choices and dilemmas that political life often present us.”

Uggh, you’ve got to be kidding me…

Through the study of select actual and hypothetical cases, this course seeks to illuminate the fundamental moral choices and dilemmas that political life often present us."

Maybe you will walk out of this class with a better understanding of South Carolina and Alaska Governors. Then you can explain it all to us on this site.

Haha!

I don’t think a class will teach them about the craziness that is Sanford and Palin :)
