Uneven ACT Scores-PLEASE HELP!!! (English and Science Section)

My ACT scores were:

English-23 (25 with essay)
Math-26
Reading-34
Science-23

I only scored a composite score of 27 because of my reading score. :/ I am a 4.0+ student at school with AP and Honors classes, but I have never been a good standardized test taker. My biggest strengths are the essay and reading, but I suck at the science section and grammar. I get stuck on the Science section because I am tired of the test and I have a hard time with the reading passage. As well as with the English section, I am horrible at grammar.

I want to get at least even scores with a compsite score of 30+. PLEASE HELP!!! Any tips or book recommended?

The correlation between GPA and score isn’t that strong, so you’ll need to put your GPA aside and start from scratch. No need to have a crutch-- get a fresh mindset and get some ACT practice books (real aCT book, etc), take the tests, and make sure you’re learning from your mistakes.

i have the EXACT same problem! I have a 4.0 also, but a 26 on the ACT and only a 1600 something on the SAT.

I need to get some good scores! I’m gonna take 3 practice tests with The Real ACT Prep Guide.

^Definitely practice it helps a lot. Always check your answer and make sure you always learn from each mistake, so next time you take it, you won’t fall in the same trap. Note what works and what doesn’t.

It’s hard to judge much from GPA. Every high school is different, so a 4.0 at your school might not mean that much. It also depends on what classes you are taking. Challenging classes help for ACT preperation.

Thanks for the help!
Do you recommend the 1269 book? I have this CD program that is supposed to help with the terms and ideas behind ACT, but I need a workbook. I also took courses at school from Princeton Review for ACT but they didn’t help much…

And what do you recommend for the Science section…like a special technique?

Most likely, these scores just show that it isn’t that hard to get a 4.0 at your school.

Actually my school is fairly difficult…compared to the local public high schools, but I am a horrible standardized test taker so I have difficulty with it.

^Some people probably will take that as an excuse, but I can relate with you on that. I suck at taking tests really badly, and I feel for you. Stupid mistakes, hard to think under pressure, I would know. :D

I started taking the ACT back in 8th grade (10th now), to get to a level where I feel confident that I can take the ACT without succumbing to pressure. Not true with the SAT yet, still working on that beast.

@Just a random tip, make sure you get a good amount of sleep the day before the test and eat like a lot of good food, lol. No matter how much studying you do, if you’re out of it on the test your going to do bad. And cramming the day before almost never works, anyway. Just have a hell of a day before. Go out and have tons of fun. :D

PR 1296 went to 26 at the beginning of junior year to a 32 now, and retaking with two total shots at a 34. ( Sept and Nov test)

Thanks to everyone for the help!

Not to say anything demeaning, but a 27 on the ACT is really good. Ive never taking a ACT test, but my goal is a 25-27.

Well, I would get “Cracking the ACT” for English or use Sparksnotes. I was getting 22s on that section in December and now I get 33+.

On math, you probably have to learn your stuff. If you are referring to June, the material was hard and you should retake for a better test. Still, for 30+, you may need to brush up.

On science, look at the advice on this forum. :P
