Uni life

Hello everyone! im a high school student who is currently fickle minded about uni choices so i thought id reach out! Could anyone tell me about BU from a personal point of view ? Specifically about the campus, majors and the life over there overall ? THANKS!

Generally speaking, BU has many social groups and options for students of various persuasions, though the student body does tend in certain directions. It’s not really a sport school-a certain subset of students are passionate about hockey, but it’s the only headline sport on campus and it’s easy to ignore if you want. If you don’t want to go to a school with rampant sport culture, especially for football, BU is fitting. Ditto, Greek life is barely existent though it IS available, just not in the incarnation that most expect. There are some party “houses” (they don’t have official houses–they’re not allowed on campus), but most of the frats/sororities are kind of nerdy and do lots of volunteer work. (she says, with love–I loved how the Greeks were different at BU)

BU has a lot of social options for nerdy people who love various permutations of the arts. There are a lot of theatre kids, TV kids, newspaper kids, music kids, acting kids, etc. There are activities to join and theme houses/floors where you can find your people. I lived in the German House and ended up friends with a lot of scientists via that. And I found a lot of friends through COM classes who loved TV as much as I did. According to a guy I met years after I graduated, BU has (had?) an ultimate frisbee league–there really are all sorts there! I’m told there are young, fun people who love to party but that wasn’t my scene  (also I wonder how well those kids did in their classes–BU is hard!)

BU is majority women and generally progressive and socially conscious. It’s easy to find a lot of whip smart feminists (and non-dude-bro bros, also lots of gay men. Srsly.) to have lively discussions with. I found people are pretty ambitious and excited by school, though that may have just been the people I gravitated towards! It makes for an amazing alumni network (and just awesome, lifelong friends). I’m still close to a lot of my BU friends, and they’re all pretty awesome. Smart, socially conscious, nerdy people. But BU kids are less boho/elite than Harvard kids, less crunchy granola than Stanford kids, less aggro-nerdy/party-hardy than MIT kids (fun fact: some MIT kids party HARD. BU kids go to MIT parties). It’s a bit more of a laidback, modern nerd vibe, IMO. (not knocking those other kinds of nerds, btw–those schools are fits for a lot of people, but personally none of vibes of those other schools fit for me where BU did)
