Unifieds question

So… how many auditions could you logistically realistically do at NYC unifieds? Taking into consideration time constraints etc. I’m confused as to how you are to schedule them all and it all work out? Like how do you know how long to allow for each? does the school tell you how long to allot for each? Sorry dumb questions coming and will continue this fall be forewarned! Lol are all the official unifieds schools located in one studio building together?

Plus I know you apply at the schools first but it’ll suck if you apply & pay the app fee etc and then somehow you can’t get the audition date to work out at unifieds or otherwise…
Help!!

For MT 2 auditions per day is ideal. My daughter went to Chicago, but what I did was check all the school’s audition dates when they were available on the website which was August for most schools. You can map out the ideal days and times. For the most part, you have your choice of audition dates if applications are in early. If I remember correctly, my daughter’s applications were in by October 1st. She was able to get the days and times that she wanted. I think there was a school that chose the day and time for her, but it was easy enough to reschedule an audition that conflicted with that school’s audition because everything was done so early.

My D scheduled 2 per day (1 morning; 1 afternoon) and had time for walk-ins. More scheduled might felt like more pressure/worry to make all of them fit; less would’ve probably felt like not enough to D, as she loved auditioning and wanted to keep doing it. So, for our D, having 2 a day plus walk-ins was a good amount.

Agree^. 2 per day (morning and afternoon) plus walk-ins. My D ended up doing 11 at NYC Unifieds.

What arrival day would you suggest for going to the NYC unifieds then? Like what day is the first audition day offered etc?

You won’t know that until you see the school’s audition dates. Many non-unified schools (those not on the unified audition websites) converge in the city at the same time. Also, the NYC schools will likely have auditions that weekend using the day before or the day after unifieds.

Yes^, you won’t know till the dates are all out. But, for example, this year we arrived on the Wednesday as we had auditions scheduled for Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun. I believe some schools had auditions that Wednesday as well. I also seem to recall some of the local schools had auditions the weekend prior to Unifieds, as well as “during” Unifieds.

Some schools (like CMU) start before Unifieds. They started on weds before this past year. We went in on weds and started auditions on Thursday. Very easily fit in 7 and could have done more.

Get applications in early so you can get
Your choice of dates and times. Come up with your “ideal” schedule leaving time for dance calls or callbacks and work from there while scheduling.

Does it make sense to do both unifieds in Chicago and NYC.??

Some people go to two locations if they can’t fit it all into one Unifieds. I think Michigan MT is only in Chicago and not NYC or LA. Seems most other schools that go to one of the regional weekends go to all.

Yes! We went to both with my D and were glad we did. D really enjoyed the Unifieds experience; she was energized by it during it. Not going to lie, though: she was tired for a couple days after the high wore down from Chicago. But, even then, she said she would do both again.

Son went to NYC Unifieds with me and Chicago Unifieds with his Dad. We are in Maine, so very few schools within reasonable driving distance. Son is also a musician, and had many theatre and music commitments, so minimizing his time out of school was important. Son’s list was created with Unified participation in mind.

When does Unifieds normally update their website? I would love to know exactly who will be there.

@momma2a - the Unifieds website only lists the “official” members of Unifieds, and up to 2 times as many non-member schools hold auditions in Chicago (I think somewhat fewer in NYC, but still many more than on the “official” list, not sure how many non-member schools attend in LA). Hence, there is no single source to go to where you can easily determine all the schools that will attend Unifieds. For non-member schools, you have to check with each school that you are interested in to see if they will be holding auditions at one or more of the Unifieds sites. Some of the non-member schools only hold auditions at 1-2 Unifieds sites, so the list of attending schools will vary considerably between each location.

The Unifieds website does provide a way to confirm the attending official member schools.

If you look back at the Unifieds threads from previous years you can see ad-hoc lists posted that will give you some ideas of what schools to expect, however, attending non-member schools are going to vary from year-to-year and location-to-location so no list that you will see will ever be comprehensive and correct for the coming year.

Here are some posts with lists from previous years:

There are more, these are just the ones that I found with a quick search.

My D did 6 auditions over 3 days during Chicago unifieds- only 2 were “official unifieds” schools at the Palmer house.

Meant to post this here

Now that official Chicago Unifieds has added a fourth day, there will be more auditions possible than last year

I think for MT majors it is difficult to plan to do more than 2 per day, especially if the audition has a dance call component. Also, some schools will do an on-site callback after the initial auditions so leaving yourself some margins is a good idea. The Pace callback was immediate - made the initial audition slot run quite late. Some schools hold separate dance calls on Sunday so maybe 3 per day if there are no dance calls that day. Finally, not all schools are at the Palmer House so budget travel time.

Posted on Texas State website: Due to the premiere of a new musical at Texas State we will be unable to attend Unified auditions this year but will resume again in Fall 2017. Please check back for an additional December and March on-campus callback dates that will be added instead.

HUGE bummer on Texas State not going to Unifieds this school year. We have heard great things about that program. Though I admit there’s a small part of me that’s somewhat glad that school is now off our list, as traveling from Michigan to see our daughter would have been very expensive.

That is a bummer! Good thing we live in Texas and can drive to the campus for auditions.
