Universities in Hong Kong

yeah i heard they are really trying to internationalize the school, HK is like a hub for east meets west. yeah mandarin would be harder to pick up(unless i go to HKUST), but im functional in it, tho my vocab is probably that of an elementary schooler. i know zero cantonese, so if i get accepted my friend is going to "teach" me, lol. probably will be mostly unsuccessful until im immersed in a cantonese speaking area =P

well i guess i meant either HK or US, but probably HK, actually ive been daydreaming about becoming hired as the international student recruiter for HKU because i basically "recruit" for it everywhere i go, ive already recruited 3 people! haha, not really, but theyve all seriously considered applying. and with the degree from HKU i was hoping i might be able to transfer back to US for masters or grad if i wanted too, b/c my friend's mom did that but with a mainland school and she makes a lot of money now as a virologist. but those are all idealizations i suppose...

maybe they will notify you of an interview in a couple weeks, since i sent in my stuff about a month before you, if the BBA reviewers even do interviews of course. ahhh im in love with HK right now!! i daydream about it constantly =D how long did you live there?

i just looked at that swire scholarship thing again, i did not realize it was such a prestigious award!! only 6 students get it, must be very difficult to get..

A lot of China mainlanders go to HKUST. In HKUST, the environment will be more competitive than HKU's. I am not saying HKUST is better than HKU, but ppl in HKUST tend to work harder and the competition is huge. I would say that it will be tough at the beginning if you don't know any cantonese, but yea ppl will help you. I lived in HK for about 13 years... yea quite a long time....

It looks like you're really into HKU. You are positive that you will go there once you get accepted?

Perhaps my post wasn't clear earlier. The admission depends greatly on what major you apply for. Things like social work (just a guess) are gonna be fairly easy (should be no problem with 1900). But acturial science is gonna be very difficult (2200 or 2300 means absolutely nothing to them for this major since SAT is zillion times easier than HK A-level); if the applicant can't convince them he/she is in the top 1% in his/her own countries, he/she will have very little chance.

Same Lee, You are a Hong Kong person right? I am too! :D

i don't think even actuarial sci will require anything greater than 2200 SAT and good GPA. HKU has been quite lenient towards international students. But that's just my thought.

I know bba law is considered as a hard program in HKU, and i am not quite sure of the SAT range for that.

i have my heart set on HK, im pretty positive ill attend if i get accepted =) but i am considering HKUST now, but i would be happy getting accepted to either! 13 years, thats long! so you came to the US for high school im guesing?

not that its any of my business =P

Yeah, for high school. I just hope that HKU is going to release the decision before May...

yeaaa, if i dont get my reply back or its not on the website by like mid april ill probably call them and ask if they can get me my answer, because yeah...the schools here need decisions by may...is HKU your top choice? or at least one of your serious considerations?

annd what was secondary school like in HK? i heard its really hard and competitive and on top of that its lecture style/rote learning. is this true? maybe im confusing it with mainland...idk my friends mom who is from HK said this was true for secondary school at least.

Serious consideration? Yes definitely
Top choice? It will depend on the amount of financial aid and scholarships that HKU and other schools offer.

Regular middle schools and high schools in US are a joke in comparison to those of HK's. So ppl in HK that got accepted to HKU are really smart and diligent.

It's good that you are so interested about HKU and HK in general =) If you have more questions, you can post or just email me.

by the way, did you get a confirmation email saying that they received everything?

i didnt officially get a confirmation email, but i know they received all my materials since i emailed them and asked if they had(i already had emailed them earlier since i was paranoid about the credit card payment, it had been pending then it just disappeared for awhile, but then it went thru later...)

hey if i had questions would it be easier for me to email you or just post? i just forgot what i was going to ask..maybe it will come back to me...thanks!

argh.... I submit the reply and it gives me an error. So I got to retype the whole thing. But anyways, yeah, you can email me if you want, in case I forget to check this thread or something. Or, post here is fine :)

Maybe I should email them too....

hey sent over an email, not sure if you got it, otherwise ill just continue posting here..=)

michelleger, I replied to your email.

[HKUST Strategic Plan 2005-2020](http://www.ust.hk/strategy/e_1.html)

HKUST is the future of HK and Asia.

we need to take “Gaokao” exams with very high score

Gaokao sound sooo scary!! Its more like torture! My counselor told me how mainland applicants have to take those, when I was complaining about having to take SATs, even though I have studied in English all throughout my life! SATs are any day better than the Gaokao!

HK is soooo academically oriented… But just so you know, HKU is more British-y than Chinese U. CU actually follows the American system a bit more than HKU
