Does anyone have any feedback on the University Honors College at UB? Im wondering if its as good a program as it sounds?

It does sounds excellent, I agree. Also interested in feedback on it. We talked to some current students and they confirmed how positive the early course registration is for honors students.

Early course registration is huge during your freshman/sophomore years. Do honors for that. Absolutely worth it.

After that, there are some extra requirements, but they’re not that hard to meet…the benefits aren’t as great during junior/senior year though when you can get classes regardless. But still worth doing, IMO.

Beyond the advanced registration, there is phenomenal advising of the Honors College kids.
They have great connections for internships and jobs, on campus and off. If they maintain the required GPA, the Honors College designation is a part of the transcript, which helps enormously when it comes to applications to graduate programs, scholarships, and fellowships. There are always enriching seminars, etc., that are geared towards the Honors kids. If desired, the Honors kids can dorm together in a dedicated dorm. In sum, it is a prestigious thing, and it opens doors. Well worth it.

I suppose it may depend on major, but for most people I know, that little “H” means very little if anything.

After attending the Accepted Students open house last weekend I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the Honors College at UB.
- Very Posh facilities. They have rooms that rival any executive conference room I’ve ever seen.
- As mentioned by others, early registration. Honors is 1st, even before athletics. You’ll get into the class you want and get to pick which time and professor you want.
- Honors classes are smaller, recitation is taught by the Prof, not a TA.
- Honors gets offered scholarship opportunities not available to others.
- The program is great. Guest lectures, colloquium, service projects. Really neat stuff

From most of the schools we visited I got the same impression as user_007, that honors was just a title and not worth too much else. At UB it seems different. I think this program is a very strong value add.

So I side with SpeaksTheTruth is adding both thumbs up for the UB Honors program.

Not saying that honors doesn’t have value…it does, for many of the reasons you’ve stated…but that doesn’t mean that the designation will mean anything to potential employers or grad schools looking at your transcript.

I have to strongly disagree with your assertion that an Honors designation on a transcript doesn’t make a difference…

When in a position to hire a candidate for a position, I definitely gravitate to the candidate who I know has displayed a stronger work ethic, has gone the extra mile, has had a more involved, challenging, and more enriched experience, has volunteered time in service projects, who wasn’t afraid of the extra effort involved to achieve goals, and most of all, has done it well.

These are all qualities that make a good employee, and I would bet that graduate school programs have a similar outlook when evaluating candidates. Those who lack the Honors designation on their transcripts either didn’t qualify for the program in the first place, or possibly were once a part of it but could not manage–or were unwilling-- to do what was neccesary to retain that standing.

007: are you an engineering student? If so, how difficult is it to maintain a 3.5 GPA? My s was accepted into the engineering school and will probably study electrical and or computer engineering. We’re wondering if the GPA requirement to remain in the honors college is elusive for most engineering students If there is mandatory curve grading it would seem to be. Thanks for any input.

Wow, almost a year later and a response to my post! Thank you SpeaksTheTruth for that positive response! My son is now attending UB…started this past Fall and is a member of the Honors College! It was a perfect move for him! He loves the school, the Honors College is top notch and always there to help if you have a question or need assistance! His grades are outstanding and I couldnt be happier with his choice. Im glad he looked over the other offers and made the decision to attend UB and walk out of college with no debt! Peppersmom, my son’s good friend is at the engineering school…his grades are good and he shouldnt have any problem keeping above the 3.5. He has always been an attentive student, so as long as your son studies and attends classes, he should be good!

Yes, Mech/Aero student. It’s not difficult if you do the work. It’s a lot of work, I’ll say that, but not difficult if you actually do the work and stay on top of it. I’ve kept just over a 3.8 so far.

Definitely do honors either way though. Worst case is they remove you from the program if you don’t keep the necessary GPA. There’s no repercussions compared to not doing honors in the first place.

Thanks 007. Have you been generally happy with the engineering program and the quality of the instruction at UB?

Absolutely! Could not be happier.
