University of Alabama Fall '24 Admissions

People will diss almost any school. The football incident could have happened anywhere and would have been posted on cc because it was distasteful. FWIW, when I applied to undergrad, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I did not want any school with a greek presence. Did it eliminate some schools that might have been great or less expensive than where I attended (though I did have a state scholarship that helped a bit)? Sure, but that was my line in the sand. And I was pretty clear about it. So if anyone had suggested a school that had even a small greek presence, I’d have rolled my eyes so high they would have popped out of my head. I think all some people are saying is that if a school doesn’t fit a student’s likes or dislikes (and sure, maybe they are young and inexperienced, but still, they can have priorities and choices), then it may get “dissed” if it’s suggested. I am just going to note, It says rolling in the CommonApp and also the Admissions office recognizes their process as Rolling. So before you come on with an attitude ridiculing someone else, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

I did not have an attitude. I merely noted that haranguing an admissions officer, like you said you did, is not a wise idea. You may feel differently.

I just want to add that sometimes the temporary ignore feature can be your friend.

For those that have been accepted, did you pay the enrollment deposit to ensure you can apply for housing promptly? Kinda sucks that you have to do that, but I have read you need to “get in line” for housing asap at a lot of these schools.

Edited to say we are still awaiting decisions on a couple of schools, so we are not by any means locked in with Alabama, but it is a top 3 choice.

I did end up paying the enrollment deposit. For us Bama is also top 3, with some still outstanding.

I know that it’s non-refundable, but we wanted to make sure to get our pick on the housing, though if I had known D24 would apply to Blount, where it doesn’t really matter, I might have held off.

I did make sure that our other schools either do a lottery, where it doesn’t matter when you pay, or don’t require the enrollment deposit first. I think that we will probably deposit the other public school too, but that the private schools we are applying to don’t have the same housing issues.

Thanks! Yeah, that is what we were thinking as well. Good luck on your other top schools!

We did do the deposit. It’s not a high choice for her overall, but it’s not out. So I figured it’s worth holding the spot if needed.

Do you need to do this to get the general honors housing?

The deposit?

I know honors housing was open throughout the pick days last spring. But if you don’t deposit by Feb 1, you don’t get a pick time at all. You can find a roommate with a pick time and they can pull you in. Or you get placed somewhere. I don’t know the likelihood of being placed in honors. No idea.

I figured that it’s unlikely my daughter has a definite decision on Feb 1. If I hadn’t paid now, I would have paid by then just to get her a pick time. If I’m paying for that pick time anyway, it may as well be an early one.

Yes, do you need to get on the list now to be guaranteed honors housing if you dont do one of the special programs. He will have a better sense by Feb 1 so if that is the real deadline that would work.

I think if he has a pick date, waiting until Feb 1 is completely fine. In 2022 honors continued to have space the entire time as well.

S24 received email today with acceptance but no mention of merit. For those who received merit, when did that come through?

We got the automatic merit letter about 10 days after acceptance.

I think what is lost here is that Alabama accepts well over 70% of the applicants. So, if your child is competitive then please be rest assured that he/she will be accepted.
I would check to make sure the school has received all materials on the portal too.
Last year they received close to 55K applications. So, a lot of applications to go through.
If Bama is your first choice, reach out politely to the admissions counselor in the area and ask if they can help move the file along. Believe me it works!
The disadvantage is housing for non-honors kids but at a minimum, they will put your kid in a room off campus if they must.

In last year’s CDS, 80%. 54,072 apps and 43,290 acceptances.

I never want to write to someone that - your kid is definitely getting in - but I do think in most cases, it’ll be true unless someone is subpar academically.

In fact, 16% come from the bottom half of the class - granted that will include athletes.

Good luck to all OPs - waiting is hard, especially if you have a perception of a quick turn around.

Our area admissions officer came to my DD24’s school. D was already accepted but the AO said they are decreasing admissions this year and that it is “competitive”. They are getting away from the “safety” school reputation.

Easy to say - but they still have growth desires so not sure what “competitive” means - but with an 18.5% yield, there’s only so much they can do.

There’s no doubt they get their share of the best and brightest - but yet their US News ranking is far lower than many schools with a much lower profile.

I’m sure it tears at them.

I wish everyone luck - and hope they get an acceptance or at least a decision - bad news is better than none at all.
