Where would you go...and why?

LSU seems kinda redneck b/c it's Louisiana but I've never been there so I can't talk. I like football though and they're really good. Overall, I'd probably choose Arizona.

any other opinions?

Arizona.

It's more respected academically. Has lots of top 10 programs, and is just better-known overall.

And...I wouldn't consider moving to the deep south unless you've actually spent a significant amount of time there. The mindset sometimes rubs northerners (and Californians) the wrong way.

When you talk of different mindsets between California and the South, are you talking mostly politics? Because I'm conservative, so that shouldn't be a problem.

No, political views is not the "mindset".

The mindset is distinct in the south from the rest of the country.

Blacks live on one side of the street, whites the other. Its not like there's lynch mobs or w/e, but its just different. It's not a conservative vibe, its not a liberal one, its a southern "thing".

Like the above poster said, test it out before committing 4 years to it. You may not mind it, you may hate it.

Sure you might see more bush bumper stickers and whatnot, but you will see confederate flag ones too. Gift shops sell Robert E Lee posters and civil war memorabilia and whatnot. People often talk about the civil war like its still going on.

The southern feel, is different than all of that though, i can't really put it into words, but it's so clearly there.

It creeps me out a little to be honest. im a rising junior (from jersey) and my aunt and uncle just moved to south carolina. My family thought i might want to check out duke and UNC, but after visiting my family in SC in a progressive (even a little liberal in that sense) area in Charleston, i still got a feel of the southern way, and i didn't like it one bit.

i must insist that i am not attacking southerners, just the south is different from the rest of the country. Its just a different feel. YMMV

Yah I got a similar feel when I visited Nashville. I didn't really like the whole "Southern" vibe and the confederate flag thing, but I'm hoping LSU isn't like that.

Would anyone else like to post their opinion of LSU?

Yeh, i can't say for lsu, but i would expect that the feel probably encompasses the whole south (flordia is the exception i suppose) and just wanted to make sure you were aware of it.

So many people will list schools like NYU Darmouth Upenn and then throw in Duke, emory and UNC. I'm sure the school itself is a mini city (like lsu probably is) and life inside the school is completely different, but the whole feel just turned me off from my experiences.

By the way, what attracts you to LSU? Just asking i suppose, since i know relatively little about it (besides location, size, and sports).

LSU seems to have a good mass communications program, and they have the atmosphere I'm looking for. Amazing football scene, the school spirit is amazing, friendly and laid-back people, great social scene, good greek scene (if I decide to rush), nice campus, warm weather, hot girls, and from what I've read, most students tend to really love their time at LSU...And I want to be surrounded by people who love life and love to have fun.

And OOS tuition is inexpensive...and I'm pretty sure I can get a scholarship as well.

And LSU seems comparable to the other schools on my list. UMiami, Florida State, San Diego State, and University of Arizona.

And Indiana University (only its in a colder and more college town environment)...as well as Loyola Marymount and UPortland as small school alternatives.
