University of Arizona

Hey all. I applied to the UC's and expect this: rejected from UCB and UCLA, accepted to UCSD, UCD, and UCSB. I'm also applying to U Arizona, but as more than just a safety. Can anyone tell me anything good/bad about U Arizona? How about U Arizona vs. UCSD vs. UCD vs. UCSB? I know about the UC's and I've never visited the University of Arizona, so I guess I'm looking for any opinions I can get! Thanks!

well i know back when my mother went there( and i'm assuming not much has changed since then) it was an incredibly dangerous area of tuscon.

the schools said to have an excellent medical field however.

the school has a LOT of hot chicks

it's #1 on collegepr0wler.com for girls

I didn't apply to UC schools so I can't compare...

I did visit UA March 4, 2005, in the midst of making my final decision. 37K undergrad students. Very large...probably two square miles. Right in the middle of downtown. Tucson is also known as the astronomy capital of the world, and as a result the streets seem dark at night. They don't go on DST, so Tucson and CA are on the same time between Apr-Oct.

Freshman are NOT guaranteed housing for the first year!! (This was a reason I decided against going there.) They don't suggest cars, especially for freshman. Parking is limited and covered parking costs a premium. Spots are given first to seniors. As a freshman you probably won't get a car.

The weather is mild to hot. January can hit 70 degrees. When I went there it went to the mid-70s (an unusually cool day for March). May-Oct can see highs above 100 with the hottest days approaching 110. (If you do go there, please make sure you have a/c, as August is the monsoon season so you're looking at 95 or hotter every day for a month with high humidity).

As I mentioned, the campus is very large. They do have the largest student union in the nation with plenty of restaurants and an on-campus movie theater. (If you want to do something at 3 a.m., you can).

The UA has a Cat Card where your meal plan and cash are put right on thhe card. It's accepted all over campus, even in the laundry machines.

The classes are all over the campus. The English class may not meet in the English building, which might confuse you.

The basketball team (coached by Lute Olson) has been nationally ranked for quite some time, and the games are routinely sold out (we're talking about 18,000 seats in the arena here)--as a result, you probably won't get to see the games. (They do a lottery amongst the student tickets, and seniors get first dibs).

The communications I got from them were very delayed. They'd write a letter, postmark it three weeks later, and then send it. (As an example, I got a letter postmarked 2/23/05 but dated 1/29/05 stating that they'd looked at my app and would decide acceptance within three to four weeks.) The next day (2/26) I get a letter postmarked 2/24 but dated 2/3 saying I'd been accepted.

I wasn't too impressed. I'm happy at NMSU.

Hope this helps...

wow, it's a good thing there's something to do on campus at 3am... because Tucson isn't much.

colinp already gave a good description of it. (in the desert, no daylight savings, etc)
if you're in Arizona and you want to be a doctor, you go to U of A.

honestly... I would recommend staying in California.
