University of California Personal Statement 2012

I wrote an essay about my deepest beliefs and aspirations in the response to the prompt:

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

However, when i read it to the classroom today, my classmates seemed to enjoy it (I think) but my teacher did not. Will you please read it and tell me what you think?

Thank you

Many people, when asked of their role model, will respond with the simple explanation of their father, their favorite athlete, or a teacher. Growing up in a small town, confined by my life’s boundaries, I never found the hero that I have waited so long for. My parents have always been there for me, to take care of me and to pass along their knowledge, but there was always a void in my heart, a place for someone whom I could follow. As I grew I realized that I would have to fill this empty space. I have put it upon myself to become the man that I have always so desperately desired. I will be my own hero.
In the world today, politics, education, and sometimes even love are fueled by greed. The natural desire for material goods pushes the world into the direction of chaos. In my life, I have always worked for the reason of making my future the best that it can. The idea of happiness in my future is the reason that I try my best in everything I do. Since I have never felt real happiness before, it is my mystery – my mystery that needs a conclusion. I believe that knowledge will not bring the happiness, but will rather unlock it. The idea of doing something that I love for the rest of my life is what pushes me to do the things that I don’t love today. The more I work now, the easier my life will be in the future; and even though my life is gray now, I hope that someday it will burst with color.
Since I was a child, my curiosity of the universe has fanned the flames of my ambitions. LEGOs, the toy of my youth, allowed me to build the vast creations of infinity. Anything I could believe could be put in front of me, and stored on shelves for years to come. As I was introduced to new ideas, mine grew exponentially. I wanted to be an inventor; I wanted to be a pathologist; but most of all, I wanted to change the world. The world that I grew up in was that of nature and beauty rather than science and technology. Western Montana is a beautiful place. The mountains tower above all else, and the clear lakes reflect our universe. This splendor has drawn me to outdoor activities that embrace the natural world. Rushing through the trees on a mountain bike smears the colors of the forest together. It creates a warped image of the world that I so desperately need. Skiing above an inversion gives the scope of the world, let alone the universe. The endless sea of clouds, only broken by the peaks of the highest mountains is an image that will never be forgotten. The world that one is raised in usually defines their interests. However, I found that nature did not answer my questions, but rather created new ones. This curiosity pushed me into the world of physics, which I have taken a very large interest in. In order to escape from the world I live in, I must read. I must read for my knowledge, for myself, for my world.
As my life has progressed, I have realized that death is not something to fear. Rather, it is a thing to be embraced. Death is a part of life, and sometimes life can become a part of death. I believe that if I have the knowledge, the strength, and the will to be great in this world, then I can become immortal. I want my ideas to continue to live after I die. While I am a part of this universe, though, I hope to be happy. I hope to change humanity. I want the world to be proud.
