According the email my daughter received when she applied (11/12/2016), it says the following:
“I am pleased to inform you that your University of Delaware application is now complete and ready for review. The Admissions Committee will take careful consideration of all your credentials before releasing a decision. Within 8 to 12 weeks, you may receive a decision, or we may request additional information such as mid-year grades.”
She was actually accepted OOS for ChemE on 11/28, so I don’t know why she was accepted so quickly.
Last year, my son applied Comp Sci in December. He heard around 8 weeks later, more within their promised time frame.
Objectively, my son had stronger stats (specifically the standardized tests) than my daughter, so I’m not sure what drove the faster acceptance. My daughter thinks it’s that XX chromosome on an engineering application.
Note that the faster acceptance did not equate to a faster scholarship. My son got $12K per year. It appears that my daughter will not get a scholarship. My daughter and I visit UDel at the end of this month, but without a scholarship, it’s the most expensive school from which she’s heard. I supposed that if she get’s blown away on the visit, we could ask to be reconsidered for merit.
I applied OOS into the biomedical engineering major and honors program and got an email stating all my material had been received on 11/28 and that I would hear back from them in 8-12 weeks…I was really surprised to get an acceptance letter in the mail about three weeks later and checked my portal to see that I had been accepted on 12/21 with a scholarship for $11k a year.
Stats: 1440 New SAT, 33 ACT, 98.2/100 W GPA, took SAT IIs but didn’t send them because they were pretty low (US History- 670, Math I- 650), 8 APs throughout HS (World History- 4, US History- 4, English Language and Composition- 4, Calculus AB, Biology, US Government and Politics, English Literature and Composition)
ECs: kickline for marching band (captain), science olympiad, S.A.D.D, student environmental action society, Varsity winter dance team (captain), Varsity girls spring track, NHS, NSHS, a dance company outside of school, and a few community service groups
Best of luck to those still waiting for their decisions!
@Anxious56 I am so very sorry for your D. She will find her place and she will be happy in the end. Was this the first school she heard from and what program was she applying to at UD? Keep your chin up as these things have a way of working out in the end.
My son has only received the first email, stating that the application had been received, on November 7th. Has has heard absolutely nothing since. All admissions materials were checked off as received on November 7th. It’s been 9 1/2 weeks. I am wondering if he should call. Has anyone called? He doesn’t want to be a pest, but I am worried maybe he missed something somewhere??
@chp0304 No, I don’t think he should call but I think you should call because of different perspectives people can have. If he calls, they might view him as impatient while they will view you as a worried parent. I have no doubt that you can talk and approach it nicely so it could help if you call. A friend of mine had her application delayed because of a UD internet error and then the problem was officially fixed last week. But in your case, he did have all checks on his portal and he did receive the email. You might want to call them.
My daughter was accepted early December. Weighted GPA 4.51, 5 AP’s all 4 or 5’s. SAT, not great 1250. Editor Spanish Newspaper, Breast Cancer Awareness Club, Unicef, Volunteer, worked all throughout HS. No merit money given…does this seem odd with such a high GPA and EC’s? Emailed admissions, waited to hear back. Many friends not as high a GPA got money.
@katy0923 For my daughter’s sake, I wish that were true that merit is GPA only. But what the rep told you when you called is at variance with their website (see http://www.udel.edu/apply/undergraduate-admissions/financing-your-degree/, select the in-state or OOS tab, and expand the merit scholarship section. Also, their net price calculator (http://www1.udel.edu/npc/) is clearly sensitive to adjustments in standardized test scores.
It’s both standardized test scores and gpa. Not gpa alone. I am certain of that. Also a holistic review of the applicant is part of the determination. This includes extracurricular activities, leadership involvement, research and/or work experience, letters of recommendation and essays submitted. It is not just one thing.
@julietan0813 No, I don’t think they have a set time to release decisions. I submitted my app on 10/29, all my materials were sent in on 12/1 and I am still waiting for a decision. I am in-state BTW.
Hello, my daughter received her acceptance yesterday through the portal (still waiting for the big yellow envelope) She is a Medical Diagnostics major, however, she did not receive her merit award with the acceptance. It said she would hear in 1-2 weeks. It is her first choice school so we are anxious to know what kind of merit scholarship she will receive. It seems as though some got them at the same time and some came after. Did merit awards come through the portal or regular mail? By the way, she is OOS and has a GPA of 5.28/4.5 scale, SAT scores 1270, all AP/ honors, varsity athlete, and tons of ECs and leadership. Any insite would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@Weathergirl33 Is the SAT score old or new SAT? If new, then I may not have the news you want to hear. My daughter had 4.58/4.00 GPA and 1260 on the new SAT. Accepted 11/28 OOS for ChemE (waited only 2 weeks to hear an admission decision), but no scholly.
We visit UD later this month. If it really, really impresses her, then she’ll ask them to reconsider.
@mtown27, thanks for your response. Yes the 1270 is out of 1600. It seems that both of our daughters have similar stats, both OOS and science majors with very good gpa. It seems that some with similar stats are being notified of up to 14K/yr!? It also seems random as some are notified right away and some will continue to wait. My daughter has her heart set on UDel and I just want to be able to get excited, but I am hesitant until we know more about financial awards. Good luck to your daughter and let’s keep in touch!
