I am from Long Island, New York and have until May 31st to choose between UD and UMD. I am a history major who is interested in eventually going to law school after I complete by undergrad. Money is really no issue and my parents have agreed to both as possibilities. As of now I really have no preference. What college should I pick? Why?

I don’t think that there’s any compelling reason to choose one over the other. They’re comparable in a lot of ways and it’ll just come down to your personal preference. I’d like the smaller size at UD - just over half the size of UMD.

They are both good schools. If i remember correctly, Maryland is more highly ranked but the difference might not be much. I like Maryland’s location better than Delaware’s. It;s proximity to DC makes it easy to access a variety of internships, etc. Not to mention the cultural appeal of a big city. It depends on what you want or feel comfortable with.

I think the environment is really what makes the decision. My son was accepted to both, but liked UD much better. I like UMD better Were you accepted to the fall term with guaranteed housing at UMD? Though it made no difference to my son in terms of preferences as he knew which one he liked better before getting the acceptances, I think he was not guaranteed housing at UM until the spring which would have had him sit out a term. That soured any preference I had for UM though in this case it was all theoretical since he got into his first choice school and that was pretty much it.

If you did not get housing for the first term at UMD, it might not be as smooth of a college transition as it would be if you are in with the fall crowd at UD. If you have fall dorm rooms for both, and you truly have no preference, go to higher rated one or ask your parents what their preferences are or flip a coin. I would tell my son MD in such a case. But without the dorm room the first term, I would recommend UD.

Thanks for the input Eptr and Gadad. Cptofthehouse - you bring up a very good point about housing because I am a transfer student. I will e-mail both schools tomorrow to see if I am guaranteed on-campus housing. Thanks to everyone who responded - anyone else?

UMD for sure. Better school, better campus, better sports.
