Hey! So i’m a highschool junior in the US and am quite interested in the University of Edinburgh. I am a little worried because I heard it is one of their most popular majors. Is it easier for international students to get in? I went on their website and they said they might give an offer to a non-EU or international applicant with stats not as good as EU applicants. Is this true?
If you come from the US system, then almost everything depends on your SAT scores (mostly the SAT 1 but also subject tests, although to a lesser extent) and your AP scores. If you are above their qualifications, then you are basically in.
Yes, they are generally more lenient with academic requirements for internationals because you pay more.
Tell us your exact stats and we can advise more precisely.
I will hopefully by the end of the year have a 31 ACT score and a 38 IB exam predicted score
Your ACT is fine but the IB predictions are definitely a bit low for IR at Edinburgh. Probably worth an application, but also apply for some easier choices. For instance I’m pretty sure that as long as other aspects of your application are good, those scores would get you an offer from Glasgow, Manchester, Reading, Birmingham or Bristol, just as examples. (These are all in quite diverse areas, too, as I know that’s a concern for you.)
So do you think I should try and get it up to a 40? Exactly how hard is it to get a 40?
Well, it’s always advisable to do as well as you possibly can. Whether you can improve depends how hard you’re working at present.
Went back and got my kid’s U of E offer:
34 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 555 at HL to include Chemistry and English. Mathematics SL at grade 6.
(For chemistry)
Hi, I am a US high school senior and I recently received an unconditional offer for International Relations at Edinburgh. The acceptance rate is about 80% for US applicants (£19,800/yr) for this subject and about 5% for Scottish (£1,000/yr) only because of the domestic funding subsidy. I had an AP4, SATII 660 and ACT 30 which is just above their requirement. If you are genuinely interested in IR and can write a good personal statement about it, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting in if you meet the min requirements. https://www.ed.ac.uk/student-recruitment/admissions-advice/admissions-statistics
