Does anyone know if you can register for classes before your orientation date? I am extremely anxious to get it out of the way and I have time during my week to go up to Gainesville.
Does anyone know when Spring registration even opens up? Is it January 4th, November 2nd, or December 24th?
After reading all of these posts I have become awfully confused, I am planning on working in the Investment Banking field just like @untitled23 and I have been accepted into CLAS Econ but now I am honestly considering staying at FIU and pursueing Finance. Any thoughts guys?
@holyranger80 if you want to save money I would concentrate on finance, if you take the econ route you will most likely have to get an MBA or masters in econ to attempt to get work as an analyst. FIU has the bloomberg terminals and experience with that is major.
@holyranger80 check your PM. @turkeysandwich1 for investment banking, anyone in that field would tell you UF over FIU just for ranking. I don’t care what anyone says on this forum, on Wall Street, the school you attend matter. I am not sure if the CLAS Econ allows you to the the business schools OCR this matters a lot. I would chose UF CLAS econ over FIU finance. Still either school you MAY need to go for your MBA or MSF, I would not go the Master in Econ route. Ranger check your PM I will send you some helpful information.
Current GPA: 3.52 (should go up after these 3 classes)
Pre-Prof GPA: 4.0
Major: Journalism
This is actually my second time applying as a transfer, the first time I didn’t have all of my pre-reqs and was not aware you could not take them at UF. Currently, I’m taking 3 and I received credit for the fourth while in high school so my counselor informed me that I did not need to take it again but after touring UF and speaking to a counselor there in the Journalism department she said I do need to take the class while in college. However, she pushed me to still apply for Spring 2016 since I do have my AA and the other three and said they make exceptions and there was a possibility I could take the last pre-req during my first semester at UF! So I’m trying to stay hopeful!
Does anyone know if transfers can be denied for Fall/Spring but admitted into Summer on a trial basis like many freshman are?
@untitled23 Wall Street? With a bland UF education? Good luck with that! @holyranger80 Go for whatever you feel is best for you. People on this website will have you thinking a music degree from UF will get you that investment banking job.
@turkeysandwich1 I never said it would be a walk in the park to get there. It’s not impossible, but it’s extremely difficult to do so. I have a good friend who made it to a BB bank from UF. It was a Finance degree he got, but there is enough UF alumni on the street to give you a hand.
Hey all! I hate to be a salesman here, but if anyone is looking for living accommodations this Spring, I’m reletting my apartment at Social28. It’s right across the street from the business school and super close to everything! Google it I promise it’s really great :). It’s a 2x1 apartment with a really cool, studious (but not nerdy) roommate! Message me with questions!
Just FYI I’m transferring out of UF, but I would be willing to answer any questions about what it’s like here in Gainesville. I want you all to make the most informed decision to see if UF is right for you :)!
Must typically have a minimum 3.0 average on all attempts of these courses.
I want to apply for Biology BS for Fall 2016. I know they ask two biology courses as prereqs but I don’t know which biology courses they are at my university because I took 4: plant cell biology, intro to cell biology/genetics, animal biology, and evolution/ecology. Which one of these grades will go into my preprof gpa? all of them? Also, I got a C in intro to cell bio but i am supposed to retake it. Depending on what the sentence above means, I am going to decide if I should even bother applying. Does it mean the average of all of my attempts should be atleast 3.0? or do i need a 3.0 on every attempt?
I really need to know if i should apply or not so any information will help. thank you
@ashxxch The average of ALL attempts. I think I got a C in Gen Chem 1 and I got into their Bio BS. Although I explained why I got that C and how I overcame my poor grades and I finished my last three semesters as a 4.0 student. If you retake your course, both the C and whatever grade you get will be factored in. Courses you retake won’t wipe the previous grade. (I’m unsure if this applies to courses with a W)
As far as pre reqs are concerned, I assume you’re from out-of-state or a private school? If you’re in a Florida state college the biology courses are BSC 2010 and 2011 which are “Integrated Principles of Biology 1 and 2” and their respective labs. My school named the courses “Biology I Cellular Processes” and “Biology 2 Organisms and Ecology” - so I assume you’re good. I highly recommend emailing the school and finding out first. They may factor all of the courses in or just two, I have no clue in your situation.
Other pre reqs are General Chemistry 1 and 2 and Calculus with Analytical Geometry 1. These grades also count towards calculating the prereq GPA.
How/where did you explain why you a got a C? my grades were influenced due to circumstances beyond my control so I would love to have a chance to explain myself. and thank you for the information. I am an out of state student. What were your stats? I don’t think i am going to get in, i had a lot of family and personal emergencies my first year that brought my grade down. now I’m trying to bring it back up but I don’t know how strict they are with the preprof gpa in particular
There are two statements of intent. One is for what you want to accomplish and the other was to explain what you’ve done. I put my explanation in the latter. I was depressed for my first couple of semesters and then dropped out a semester, so I had pretty bad grades early on (< 3.2 GPA during those semesters). I came back and I think I managed a 3.5-ish GPA that semester and then my GPA continued to climb (4.0 GPA for my last few semesters). I feel like I didn’t put complete blame on my circumstances, but talked more about how I overcame it and I was able to work hard. If you’d like, I can send you what I submitted.
The preprof grade states that you “must typically” have above a 3.0 GPA in all your attempts of preprof courses and a 2.8 overall GPA. With their wording, I assume it isn’t a hard criteria. I assume their hard minimum GPA is a 2.5. Other than that, they have the suggestion that you have a 3.2+(?) GPA to be competitive.
My stats:
Overall GPA - 3.6
Prereq GPA - 3.4
In-state Community College
Had a “rising GPA” which tends to look really good.
I volunteered in the field I would like to be in. I also took part in research at my college. I included both of these in my statement of intent.
what college did you transfer from? I’m still a sophomore and i have 15 credits to go and, as you know, i am out of state but in an unexpected turn of events i need to move to florida now, as soon as this semester ends. I am planning on going to a community college since the deadlines for all the established universities has passed. where do you suggest I go? I don’t know a lot about florida i am from new york. Also, it would help a lot if i could see what you submitted. Thank you so much. @IFeedCats
@ashxxch I went to St. Petersburg College. It is 2.5 - 3 hours south of UF and is near Tampa. Personally, I feel they went above and beyond for a state college. Their Clearwater campus is a hub for sciences and they have really good professors. That is where I was able to get actual research experience in a community college. They do fund research, just not as much as you will find at an actual university. I definitely recommend it if you are going for marine biology, animal science, or plant science.
Most people will recommend that you go to Santa Fe (and possibly UF will recommend, even though they claim they don’t give any priority to Santa Fe students). I don’t have personal experience there, but I’ve heard they are a good school and they are in Gainesville so you won’t have to move multiple times.
They both claim they’re the best in education without a link to official rankings. They both offer Bachelor’s programs. So I’d call it a draw as far as education. You’d have to speak to a Santa Fe student to see their opportunities there.
@IFeedCats do you know anything about valencia? it would be easier for me to go around the orlando area. if not, i think around tampa would be better because i know gainesville is going be a commute for me and I don’t want to do it if I don’t have to.
@ashxxch I know nothing about Valencia other than their partnership with UCF. I, personally, don’t like the Orlando area in general. So I’m a bit biased on this. If you’ll be in that area for personal reasons, I assume it will be a fine college. (They also offer Bachelor’s and are the third largest state college in FL)
Tampa’s CC is Hillsborough Community College. I’ve had friends that go/went there and I haven’t heard the best things. But take that with a grain of salt since I’ve never been. St.Pete/Clearwater will be the same distance to Orlando as Gainesville.
Valencia is probably the states strongest community college. A solid GPA with good coursework and the AA will get you into UF. Valencia is a second chance for high school kids who had a slip up or two in high school. They won’t even look at your test scores or high school transcripts
@IFeedCats@OrlandoGator thank you for your help. do you guys know any other good schools that would be good for transferring to UF? At this point I don’t know exactly where I will be living so I need more options. Also, I was looking at Santa Fe and i realized I would have to spend an extra semester there because they want a lot of humanities and elective/distribution credits for their AA and I don’t want to do that. is that the case for every college in florida or is it just santa fe?
I still don’t know which one of my biology classes will transfer. i don’t know how to find out. Every time I call someone they give me vague answers. I haven’t taken plant biology so I am assuming Ill have to take biology 2, which will be repetition of ecology for me. If anyone has any information on this please let me know or if you could tell where i can find out and get a proper response too.
