I'm a first time poster, but I have been reading for several months. The information has been wonderful. I was wondering if anyone has any information on the MT program at the University of Florida. On the Big List it does not list them as a highly selective program but their website says that they only take 4 new students per year. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I went to the Univ. of Florida (well, in 1983!) as an accounting major. I don't remember there being ANY theater shows while I was there, but they certainly could have added MT to their offerings. It is a GREAT school, though; beautiful campus and LOTS to do! I loved it.

Gator alum here as well, same time as rossji. Have not clarified all the details but aggressively pursuing information and will be happy to share as it comes to fruition as D is a senior and hoping to audition 10/28. I can tell you that they have amazing facilities and an equity theater there in Gainesville which offers the students various opportunities. D had a theater teacher that had graduated from the BFA acting program and was excellent.

Thanks so much. Any information you can share will be greatly appreciated.

Nocadad, where are you from? My wife (and our older D) are the Gators in the family and our D is scheduled to audition on 10/28 also. Hopefully the audition will end in time for us to get to Jacksonville for Fla-Georgia!!

We live in New Orleans but most of family still in Orlando and Gainesville. Have you already been able to secure an audition spoT? If so how did you do so?

Try emailing Dr. Linda Brown at browla@ufl.edu

Good luck!!

scogor,
Got it! Thanks for your help

My pleasure. Go Gators!!

bumping up to see if Noccadad or others will share what they have learned since the last post

Guys, here's what I can tell you: The undergrad MT program is very small--I think they took no more than 4 undergrads last year and it may be less than that. There are no more than 2 musicals done by the MT program each year (this year I think it's only one--"A Funny Thing Happened...") and auditions for their Fall shows occur on the first or second day of school. Most parts will go to either upperclasspersons or MFA students. Facilities are wonderful, the campus is beautiful, it's a great school academically and a nice mixture of a large school in a small town. There is a new dean of the Fine Arts School this year and I sense that UF's President has made UF's liberal arts and fine arts programs a priority as he knows these programs have to be top notch in order for UF to be recognized as a preeminent institution. Our younger daughter, as many of you know, made the MT audition tour last year and had to "settle" on attending UF and pursuing majors in Theatre Arts and Public Relations and minoring in Dance. She is very happily in the midst of her first semester and it sounds like she is being challenged in her theatre and dance classes and landed a role in "B and the B" at Gainesville's local community theatre the same week that she auditioned for (and was not cast) UF's Fall productions. There is a very good equity theatre in Gainesville (The Hippodrome) that put on a fantastic production of "The Great American Trailer Park Musical" this summer. Several of the cast members were UF students. There are also a number of "unofficial" performing groups at the school--Florida Players does shows (such as last year's "Urinetown") and there is an improv group called "Strike Force" that my older daughter worked with when she was a freshman and sophomore there.

A word of caution: because of our state's scholarship program for in-state high school students that meet certain academic and community service standards ("Bright Futures"), it has become increasingly difficult to qualify academically for admission to UF. The school is certainly worth exploring especially if your student wants a strong education outside of the MT experience.

Oh yeah, and the Gators' basketball and football programs aren't too shabby, either...

Scogor, great to hear from you and also about your D's time at UF so far. Seems like she is finding her way and already doing great things. Congrats on B and B! It sound like there are theater opportunities for her there to perform even if not a BFA student. Seems like she is able to piece together courses and outside theater work around her interest areas just great. I know where you guys are going to be on weekends this fall!
