I’m currently a sophomore in high school, so while I know nothing much can be said at the moment, I’m wondering if my class load is rigorous enough. My current weighted GPA is a 4.3, every core class I take is honors or AP except gym and choir, and I get consistent A’s in every class except math, although I am two years above my grade level, I took Algebra one and geometry in middle school and took Algebra two last year and got a B and a C. I took honors biology last year and honors chemistry this year, but next year rather than taking AP physics I’m taking AP Bio, and will never end up taking physics. I’m also taking AP stats as my math class, and will never take pre-calc or calculus. While none of these classes are required for U of I, and for the next two years all of my classes will be AP, making my total AP count 10, and as of now I’ve already gotten A’s in three of them. My question is, will not taking physics and calculus make it difficult for me to get into good state schools such as U of I? I’m not planning on going into a STEM field. Also I got a 30 on my practice ACT and am 91 percentile on my PSAT. Thank you!
Unless you’re going to Engineering at UIUC, you are doing pretty well. The stats for 2018 students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences ACT: 28-33, SAT: 1290-1480, and GPA (I assume unweighted): 3.40-3.90. So you’re doing just fine (though you’ll need to up your SAT, for which you have two years.
According to their admissions page, the course requirements are:
English: 4 years required
Math: 3 or 3.5 years required, 4 years recommended
Social sciences: 2 years required, 4 years recommended
Lab sciences: 2 years required, 4 years recommended
Language other than English: 2 years required, 4 years recommended
Flexible academic units: 2 years required, 4+ years recommended
So you’re good on that front as well.
So, if your SAT improves, UIUC in a non-STEM field should be a good match.
