So I recently spoke to a U of I counselor and she told me that since I will have 60 credits by the term of entry Fall '10, that I would need to complete math through Calc III.

I currently have 28 credit hours completed with a 3.25 GPA but they're all gen ed classes because I was an undeclared major my 1st year in college.

Now after declaring a major [computer science], I would like to apply to the college of liberal arts and sciences which requires;
Calc 1, 2, 3
computer science 2 semesters
spanish 2 semesters

I'm currently a student at a CC and my Fall 09 schedule currently looks like this;
computer science 1
calc 1
spanish 101
geography
total = 16 credit hours

Hypothetically speaking that I get a 4.0 for the Fall 09 semester, my GPA will be at a 3.52 with 44 credits. I will then apply to UIUC right after I receive my final grades and I don't know how much weight the admissions office will put on my course schedule.

My question is, If I do apply with 3.52 GPA and 44 credits, how good are my chances of getting in to LAS-computer science? If I do get in, Do I need to just maintain a 3.2 GPA? If it drops will my acceptance be rescinded? If I don't complete Calc III, will they rescind my acceptance? I will have to take Calc 1 - Fall, Calc 2 - spring, and Calc 3 - summer, and I'd have a total of 65 credits.

UIUC lists the recommended min. GPA for transfers for each of their colleges.

I would guess that they would tell you what GPA you need to maintain to keep your end of the deal. Is 3.2 for one semester really asking too much that it would concern you?

If you cannot finish pre-req’s they usually ask you to mention that in your last essay and give the reason why.

Taking away acceptance once admited is usually because of doing something you said you were going to do or completely messing up. Along the lines of, getting a low gpa in fall or not taking the classes you said you were going to take.

I assume you would need to take 16 credits in fall and get a decent GPA along with taking any classes that are required that you have no taken yet that you are able to take.

I already have a 3.25 and will raise it to a 3.52 at the end of the fall semester. I would just like to know how important it is to have calc 3 completed. So if I don’t have calc 3 completed, there is no way that I will get in?

I am by no means an admissions expert, but here is my 2 cents:

Universities are, to some extent, concerned about making revene. This is why undergraduates are so important! Therefore, the ideal candidate would be a freshman committed to 4 full years of paying tuition, fees, room and board, etc. So, if you apply with fewer credits they could make more revenue.

However, if you think you could handle it, I would take the calculus III at the community college. You are probably accustomed to the environment there, and the course may be less stressful that way. If you really enjoy calculus maybe you would like to save that course to take at UIUC where the professors may be even bettter!

I would suggest contacting the counselor and asking them about your particular situation.

Again, I am no expert! I am simply a fellow CC student that reads a lot about college and loves academia!
