Hey! My story is decently long and complex but I hope I can sum it up for you. Basically, my high school performance has been a huge disappointment. Through my first two years I took full honors class schedules and failed each and every one of them. Then, nearing the end of my sophmore year, my dad passed away. Many would point to this and say it can explain my grades, but the trend was the same and before he passed away. I continued on performing poorly my Junior year and managed to get myself into trouble in school - cumulating in 3 different suspensions. However, nearing the end of the year, I decided to turn it around. I realized that I couldn't continue lazily going through life as I'm in a one parent household w/ little financial support. This is when I decided to start studying for the act, getting some community service hours, and taking a summer class. I, for once, followed through on this and got a 32 on my first act test and signed up for the semester of precalculus I failed during the school year(btw im a senior now).

tldr: bad grades, father passed away, bad grades/behavior, good act score and summer work

I hope to apply with a little positive work behind me and the score on my act. Would a 32 be enough to carry in an embarrassing 2.1 into Kansas? Keep in mind my essay will revolve around my progression following my father's death.

In addition, I ran cross country 2 years, played baseball 1 year, and scored decently well on my AP tests(Gov:4, Comp Sci:4, Euro Hist:4),

Thanks again!

I also hope to raise my 32 to a 33 or 34 before I apply. I think this is well within my abilities and should be factored into your opinions.

I don’t really know anything about University of Kansas nor how they choose their applicants but I say it’s worth a shot. Many colleges actually look more into GPA than EC’s and test scores. You’re ACT score is pretty good but it’ll look more impressive to show it alongside a good enough GPA. Of course it’s not all about GPA and test scores. Your essays can be very influential and play a big part in whether or not they decide to accept you. Good luck! :)

His essay will play no part in KU’s admissions because KU doesn’t ask for an essay. He’s met the admissions requirements and will thus be offered a spot.

I’m pretty sure it states that the essay isn’t required; it would be advantageous for me to include one though so I would. And my gpa being a 2.1 doesn’t meet their requirements, isn’t that a concern?

Are you in state or out of state? Either way you’ll get in (I’m assuming you’re graduating high school in 2014), unless you’re applying to a specific school within KU.

If you’re in state, all KU asks for is a 2.0+ GPA or a 21+ ACT. If you’re out of state, you need a 24+ ACT to be admitted if you’re graduating high school in 2014. Since you have a 32 ACT, you’re in.

I’m out of state and yes im 2014

Great. You’ll get into KU.

hahhaha alright sounds good thank you

You’ll get into KU. All that’s required is a 2.5 GPA in qualified admissions curriculum OR an ACT of 24+ OR graduate in the top 1/3 of your class. Notice the “or” not “and”. So your GPA doesn’t really matter.

These requirements apply to all other Board of Regents universities in Kansas, so if you decide KU isn’t for you, you have Pitt State, Fort Hays, Emporia, Wichita State, and K State to choose from as well.
