University of Maryland C/O 2020 Discussion

I was accepted! Does anyone know when BK scholarship semifinalists are announced?

Does anybody know if regular decision decisions should come out the same day as early action decisions? I submitted my app at 12:01 and online it just says app received 11/2. I got my decisions already (accepted) but i was just wondering if that means I’m in as EA thus having scholarship considerations.

@nvaughan75 - I’m sure that @maryversity will reply, but here is some info in the meantime.

SPRING 2017 ADMISSION

If you get this decision, do NOT automatically reject it. UMD has 2 programs just for spring admits. One option is to spend the fall semester in a Study Abroad program (Paris, London, etc.). I don’t know much about it. Search the UMD website for info. The other option is Freshman Connection. UMD has had this program for many years. Students who enroll in Freshman Connection (I think there is a limit on the number of enrollees) can

  • Go to an Admitted Student Day
  • Go to Orientation and register for classes
  • Move-in in the Fall with the other Freshman
  • Start taking classes on campus in the fall of 2016
  • Live in a Dorm on campus and have a roommate
  • Sign up for a campus meal plan
  • Attend all athletic games and campus social events and parties.
  • Basically have all the benefits of being a Freshman TERP

What is the downside? You cannot participate in Division I sports and your class selection is somewhat limited and all your classes will be in late afternoon (3 PM or later) or early evening.

And NO ONE cares that you are in Freshman Connection. My D has some good friends who took this option and they basically had a normal freshman fall semester experience. Just something to consider.

To expand a little further, my had has one very good friend from high school who went into Freshman Connection. My D is in the Honors College. Her friend went to the same Admitted Student day that we did. Her friend moved in the same day as my D and got an air-conditioned dorm very close to the dorm my D was in. My D’s dorm was NOT air-conditioned. They did just about everything together and with other friends (football games, meals, concerts, parties, etc). No one gave a hoot about someone being in Freshman Connection. Everyone was adjusting to college life and making friends. Now they are both sophomores (living in the same dorm) and 4 of them are planning to get an apartment together next year.

Here is the orientation schedule for FC

I hope this helps to ease your concerns

I was accepted into the Global Communities program. I had not heard about it before and am still slightly weary about it. It seems to be a Living Learning Community but it is not connected to the Honors or Scholars program? If anyone has any more in depth information about it, it would be greatly appreciated. Ive seen some mixed reviews about the program here on CC.

@meaa7130 - last year “look for something in the mail” email was sent out to BK invitees on 2/4 and actual invitation letter followed soon after.

Does anyone know what day roughly we should be getting our acceptance package in the mail?

@SoofDad Thanks! I’ve done some digging and thanks for the Orientation page! But a big question I’ve got, will the fall 2017 semester be my first semester of my sophomore year or still officially be my freshman year, and will the spring 2017 semester be officially my second semester of my freshman year? Basically what I’m asking will I always officially be a semester behind even though I really am not?

@nvaughan75 - You will be a sophomore in the fall of 2017. You will graduate in the spring of 2020 along with everyone else starting next fall. That assumes you stay on track for all the courses required by your major, but that is true for everyone. If you can get any AP credit, you may even be ahead.

@SoofDad Okay that sounds great! And yes, I do have a ton of AP credits! and I’ve been doing a lot of scheduling homework so when a lot of the FC stuff kicks up I’ll be ready to see if I can get into all the classes that I would need to get done in my fall semester and a little more maybe! Thanks so much for the information!

Is there a difference between College Park Scholars and the Honors College? Is there any way to still be considered for the Honors College if I am in Scholars?
What are people’s stats who were accepted into the Honors College?
I have a 3.9 GPA and a 33 on my ACT

@ajs28152 See this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1856682-college-park-scholars-vs-honors-college.html#latest

@Ontara RD decisions usually go out in March at the earliest, so you got an EA decision. Which means you’ll get all the reviews, including scholarships.

@ajs28152 - When it comes to Honors and Scholars, you cannot go by stats alone. The admissions review for both is holistic. I know that people hate to hear that, but it’s true. Your LORs, short answers and essay are all reviewed as part of the decision.

However, to answer your question, most of those admitted to Honors have a 4.0 UW GPA and 1450+ SAT., but there are always exceptions.

I don’t know if there is a way to appeal.

For everyone asking about Honors Vs. Scholars and appealing if they got Scholars and not Honors… give the programs a chance first. You’ll get info from them in the mail and have the chance to talk to them at Open Houses. The programs are different but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. They have different focuses. Both are awesome so give them a chance (same with Global communities, CIVICUS, FIRE, etc).

I know plenty of people who thought scholars was “second best” but LOVE it (and some honors people who wish they were in scholars). Give it a shot before you start asking for appeals. Appeals are SUPER rare anyway. But relax and wait for the info to come. Likely this is what they’ll tell you if you try to ask for an appeal this early anyway.

I was accepted with pretty low stats. I didn’t think I was going to get accepted. But I got into the school of Public health, but I want to change my major to finance now. Does anyone know how to do it, and would that be possible for me when I barely got accepted? I know that school of business is the most competitive for UMD, so I don’t know if I even have the chance.

Helppp.

@angela98 - This was posted on another UMD thread by @terpgirl

You should actually call the admissions office. They handle major change requests before May 1.

@angela98 Smith is the hardest? I always thought it CS

@ClassOf2020x oh i mean like it is one of the popular department. CS is probably the most competitive

@ClassOf2020x Smith is the most competitive school to get in. Most of the other schools allow you to transfer in as long as you successfully complete the required courses. At Smith, successful completion of the courses does NOT guarantee admission. Your GPA must be high to have a decent shot. Involvement in a business related club or an internship is also helpful in the admission process.

@stayweirdsmcm Thanks! That makes me feel much more proud for getting into Smith
