My daughter received scholarships from a number of out of state Universities (we reside in Texas) and most of the colleges (unlike Maryland) post their requirements for scholarships. The University of Maryland sent my daughter approx 2 letters per month welcoming her to the Scholars program, they should have saved their money sending worthless letters which only confused our family about the potential scholarship available to attend. Anyhow Maryland was on the top of our list and after we just found out that they offer zero scholarship for out of state (are you kidding me 45K a year for a state university?) high acheivers (approx 1400 Sat and 4.0) and they do not inform you if you do not receive one…we feel that they were just fishing to “hook” us and let us find out on our own at close to decison making time, “sorry no scholarship”. I reside in TX now but me and my two brothers attended and we are all unhappy now with Maryland. My oldest brother even got married at the chapel at the University of Maryland. Good thing my daughter received a very good scholarship from each school she applied to, just sad that she will not be able to attend, the family relationship will end now.
That will show those turtles. Don’t mess with Texas!!
They do give scholarships to out-of-state students. I’m sorry that your daughter didn’t receive one. The scholarships are a lot more subjective than admission to UMD. Students with stats lower than hers got scholarships, and ones with highers stats didn’t get: it all comes down to the University’s priorities. It’s a bad idea to think you have a “family relationship” with a university, considering that it’s essentially a corporation.
Thank you so much for your response, wish we coulkd learn of their “priorities”. Other colleges are much more transparent. I just wrote the post so that other out of staters would be able to get a reality check when dealing with UMD, used to love this school…no longer.
They definitely award money to out of state students. I know MANY who received merit scholarships. It’s just hard to predict who will get the scholarships. And it’s not just like that at Maryland. I’ve seen that happen at many colleges where a student gets a lot of money at one school and none at another even though the schools are comparable. Why don’t you call Maryland and see if you can get some type of explanation?
