University of Michigan 2021 SMTD Admission

@ccruns4014 yes, my D saw the email first, with acceptance. She does not check portals so I’m not sure if something changed there first.

@followurheart Thank you for the info!

My daughter auditioned Feb 3rd for the BFA in Acting, and she received a phone call from the theatre department on Feb 24th, and then an email from the same professor on Feb 26th. He told her that she should hear from the university by the end of this week… which leaves just two more days! Excruciating!

I’m wondering if all you folks who got acceptance emails so far… Were they from the school or the university? Also, what time did the email come? Maybe I should stop checking after 5pm? Ha!!

And is anyone out there doing theatre? It looks like the music folks are a couple days ahead of the theatre folks.

Oh man… Can’t stop checking the portal and email… !!!

S’s was from Michigan.Admissions@umich.edu, saying, “You’ve been admitted to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance BMA in Performance for Fall 2017.”

@pazzesca Thanks, I got the two emails, one from SMTD, another from the president… I applied to the dual-degree program. But now, it seems like I have only been accepted to the music school. Best of luck.

@pazzesca - email timestamp Date: Wed, Mar 1, 2017 at 2:01 PM

Thanks, @GoForth! I’m sure all will be fine… but… There’s no point in checking all night long like an insane person (which I am, especially since she got accepted to the BFA, but has yet to hear back from the university… I mean, Are you kidding me???) … :slight_smile:

So, @BassKer … Did you get the email from Michigan.Admissions@umich.edu? That’s the weird thing for us and making us crazy!!! … We got the email from the SMTD, but not from Michigan.Admissions@umich.edu yet… UGH!

@pazzesca - Don’t forget to check the portal. Sometimes decisions are posted there first and it takes 24 hrs for the emails to flow out.

@pazzesca I don’t quite understand your question. If you are accepted to SMTD, you are automatically accepted to the university.

Yes, the acceptances are from the university. The letter even has a link to pay the deposit if desired. You are correct @Basker, if you are accepted to SMTD, you’re in.

I hope you’re right @BassKer and @coloraturadad !!! We’re still waiting for the news from the university though… It’s hard celebrating before then!

@pazzesca 2 years ago our friend was accepted to BFA Acting. He received that notification he was accepted to SMTD and then a week letter a second email from admissions declining him academically. It was all worked out, but it was horrible for a few days while they emailed and called to straighten it out. My D received two emails a few days ago, one accepting her academically and then one to SMTD. So like you, I would prefer to have both in hand, I am a bit of a worrier too. Have you spoken to anyone or emailed? It’s probably just a lag in emails my gut is to agree with @BassKer and @coloraturadad.

Well, I went onto the live chat and asked… You folks seem to be correct… I still want to see the official email from the university before we celebrate though!!!

Merrie: If Theatre and Performance has accepted her, then she has been accepted to the University of Michigan.

Pazzesca: Do you promise??? :slight_smile:

Merrie: I am not allowed to give you a decision over the phone. All I can say is that if she has received an email congratulating her and saying that she has been accepted into that particular program within the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, then she has been accepted to the university.

@pazzesca it’s time to celebrate!

HA! Well, I certainly feel more relieved, but I think we’ll still wait… Especially after hearing your friend’s story! :slight_smile:

Even that one had a very happy ending.

My understanding is that if you only applied to the SMTD than once you are accepted there, you are set for UMich. If you applied for a second program - say in college of arts and sciences, engineering, etc. Then you can be accepted into SMTD, but not the other academic program. Sounds consistent with what is above, but let me know if I am incorrect.

@beaglemom - That should be correct. When my daughter went through the process (junior at UMich now), she was accepted at CoE before music audition occurred. When subsequently accepted into SMTD, she received updated letters from the university with dual-degree info (how to accept one or both admissions, how to handle orientation registration if doing both, etc.).

Are there any stats on the number of people who get taken in from the waitlist for instrumental performance?
