My “D” is officially IN! The acceptance showed up on the portal today (of all days, on a Sunday, when we least expected it)!
It said this: “Congratulations! You have been admitted to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance! Your official admission letter will be arriving shortly in the mail.”
YAY! GO BLUE!
Maybe you’ll meet her, and/or be her dorm-mate, @BassKer!!!
@pazzesca Congratulations, you can finally celebrate. UM is on the top of my list too. So I will see her there!
@toomanyflats I think that probably depends on the number of students who choose not to attend. Something you can always do is to email them, express your interest and implicitly ask about that stats. Hope this is helpful…
Packet came in the US mail today.
@pazzesca - There is an Acting Forum on CC too, just FYI!
e-mail for acceptance (violin) arrived today for D
I know UM does not give much OOS merit $$, does SMTD have any talent merit $$? Any of your offers of acceptance from UM include merit? Congrats to you all!
@vistajay I can only speak for my experience. My D has not received a financial package yet. They indicated that would arrive a few weeks after the offer and after we completed all of our financial aid paperwork.
Years ago my OOS S received significant merit - both academic and music. They were separate letters, and separate from financial aid, which was tiny.
@SpiritManager that’s good to know. Did those letters come with the offer to attend or later? Do you recall?
FYI, from the SMTD school site, it says scholarships are “merit based, need informed” One of the faculty teachers mentioned my D that they are usually notified around three weeks after acceptance.
@followurheart - I’m afraid I don’t remember when the music merit letter came - if with acceptance, or not. Definitely the academic one came later. And @coloraturadad, we did have financial need - so that might have informed the music merit, although not the academic merit.
Also don’t be afraid to negotiate. As kids reject offers, they may have more money to award.
S received a packet today mentioning that financial aid and scholarships were in the process of being looked at, and they mentioned (in a form-letter manner for everybody I suppose) the merit range from $1,500 to full tuition.
I called U-M financial aid office today to make sure everything was in check… They said that they (SMTD) don’t give ANY merit-based aid until the 2nd semester… After they see how merit-worthy they are at U-M. Just an FYI. They also said other good stuff that I’m super happy about… but no definite awards for a couple more weeks.
@pazzesca - I am not sure how my brain can process the concept of merit scholarship money not kicking in or being defined until after a first semester.
That seems like misinformation to me, unless something has drastically changed recently. It certainly wasn’t what we found years ago, and I’m sure some current Michigan parents will chime in. The financial aid worker, who might have been a student answering the phone, probably didn’t really know how the scholarships from SMTD are awarded.
Totally agree, @SpiritManager It was not our experience last year, though things can change in a year.
@GoForth , my D received the same packet yesterday mentioning the financial aid/scholarship process and the merit range of $1,500 to full tuition.
@goforth and @coloraturadad I feel a tiny bit sad we have not gotten that packet.
Ok…correction. Packet just arrived.
Lol @followyourheart, I did not mean to get you worried. I have to admit I also felt the same way. Blame it on the snail mail! I’m afraid to ask if you got the sticker
