Hi!
The University of Michigan is my dream school and I hate to admit it but my chances do seem kind of slim. I was wondering with my gpa, which is around a 3.3 unweighted, will end me up in an immediate no pile. I have a 31 on the act, I am an eagle scout, have over 500+ hours of community service, and many more extracirrciulars. Not only that but I am a sober kid, after a rehab in the beginning of my junior year I got my life on track, fixed my grades, and have a great story. With my EC’s, act score, and inspiring story of emotional change, drug use, and my life now do you think I would have a chance?
thanks!!
a 31 is relatively low for Mich.
I think you should apply but temper expectations.
You do have a great story - and Michigan is one of the 180 or so CRCs (Universities with a funded collegiate recovery community) so they want to support you. Why don’t you contact the director of their CRC (see link) & see if he can help you navigate the process? Best wishes to you,

The getting sober part of your story worries me a little … I would seek some other opinions about the possible risks of making that a part of your application/essay.
do you think including my story of getting sober and the path it led me to emotional stability brings me down as an applicant?I thought that it since it is uncommon for highschool students it would help me during the application process. Thanks for your reply.
It is risky talking about drugs and alcohol
Unless your school has very low GPA in general, 3.3 is not likely to make it unless you are recruited.
Congrats on figuring out how to get sober and continuing to stay sober. That shows determination and inner strength beyond your years. I would second @Notknot77098 and contact the director of the collegiate recovery community at Michigan.
3.3 is practically impossible to be admitted, since its one of the most important aspects of your application. People with a 3.3 aren’t likely to have a chance unless they are athletes on a scholarship. My advice is set up a meeting with your admissions counselor to tell them your story so they look at you as someone besides a low gpa.
You all realize that this is a post from 2017? I hope the OP did get into a great school and has had a great freshman year.
Nobody bothers to look at the dates……that would be too much effort.
It looks like this thread is no longer relevant to the OP. Locking it.
