@DBY2017 the tuition at UM OOS is about $47k/year. Total cost with room/board is estimated at $62k/year. Source: https://finaid.umich.edu/cost-of-attendance/ Your daughter has received an extremely strong package! Congratulations.
Thanks- UM estimated total cost as $67,006.00 on our Financial Aid form.
Does she have some college credits?
@DBY2017 Don’t look at total cost of attendance. Look at the amount that the school bills directly to you. That would be tuition/fees and room/board (freshman year – later years she’ll probably be off campus). That’s the bill you have to pay. Half of it will be charged first semester, half second semester. Subtract her scholarships and financial aid. Then divide by 10 (the monthly payment plan). That’s how much you will owe per month,
Perhaps STAMPS has higher fees, otherwise the CoA seems high.
Unless necessary, I would not choose the payment plan. There is an additional cost and it does not spread out as much as you want.
FYI- here is what is on our FA documents we just received:
Tuition and fees: $47, 476
Housing and Meals: $11,189
Other costs (books, supplies, personal expenses) : $8,3332
Total Cost: $67,006.00
She got a Grant of : $23,231
Scholarship:; $12,500
Work Study: $3000
Federal loan: $5500
So estimated cost would be: $ 22,775.00
She does have 4 AP classes that she got a 4 or higher on and 2 College Credit courses but they are from Ohio schools so not sure if UM will accept them. I’m not sure that makes a difference though, she would just take other classes to make up for it. UM is very flexible and she could do incorporate almost anything into her BFA degree if she wants.
I’m sure it’s the $8,332 worth of expenses that increases it. I know it’s an estimate so it may be on the high end, however sometimes art supplies can be more than books.
Books and art supplies can be expensive but much less than $8k. Put it another way, your daughter’s expenses outside of books and art supplies are already baked into your current costs of living. The incremental additional cost is likely closer to $2500 than $8000 based on the cost of books and art supplies estimated for RISD for example.
I think the book and supplies for CoE is just over $3000, we hardly spend even $500 on books each year.
WHen do you ask what college credits they will take? What is the process of doing that?
Dby2017. It’s only an estimate. Last year when they raised the tuition our package was also raised to just about match the raise in tuition. We didn’t have to call or anything
My D2 got 5 revisions of FA over the summer before freshmen.
Also, you got a very nice package. But again even though you have scholarships you have nothing to lose to call financial aid. No one here knows all your circumstances. The worst case scenario is that you don’t get anymore money.
As far as book cost. First semester my son bought books. This semester no books since most classes are downloaded. Think just one English book. Might want to check into this. Also buying used books for my bfa daughter saved a lot. Amazon prime does a nice job and some books were practically new.
Of the 8k, I think they allow for the price of an Art ready computer for each student, plus the cost of Adobe and other Art software. So, around $2-4k, depending on your computer package.
@billcsho I actually enjoy the payment plan. True, paying an additional $30 administration fee stinks, but it’s worth it for us to have affordable monthly payments.
@pwraskin99 You can check what AP or IB credits each school accepts, here: https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/ap-ib-credit
If you have credits from college, there is a searchable database on their website to see if it is transferrable.
The computer specified at http://computershowcase.umich.edu/new-students/art/ is pretty pricy so that makes sense… but it is a one-time rather than annual cost. I also wonder if a ‘lesser’ macbook would work depending on the type of art program being pursued!
Does UM tell you what credits transfer or do you ask? Not sure how it works.sorry. My son is graduating community college and HS at same time so he’ll have 64 credits from community college, just trying to understand the process. thank you
