This is Apples refurbished computers. Most are basically new. Think you bought a computer and decided not to keep it and returned it. They have the same warranty as brand new also. I have bought here for years and never an issue if you have to go Mac.
Better specs then what they showed and much cheaper price as an example. Hope that helps. I think students can get student versions of software for free or very reduced pricing also.
Don’t count work study as part of your up-front discount. She earns that money as she works. You don’t get it up front. Just disregard it for paying the bills. It can be used for her daily expenses on campus.
The payment plan is useful if you are paying partly out of current income. The fee is minimal, like $30.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone. This is our first child going to college so we are really nervous and anxious over all of this. I feel like I hijacked this thread and probably should stop. When it is all said and done we have to decide if a top tier university like UM is worth taking out loans for. If you go with the 8K personal expenses, we would have to take out a 17K a year loan (that includes the 5500 fed loan). Not sure UM is worth that kind of debt over a state school in Ohio or not. Also, UM is actually flying my daughter to them in a few weeks and paying for all expenses for 3 days to celebrate her scholarship to Stamps Art. Apparently she got one of the few scholarships the Art school gives out. Still can’t believe they are doing something like this for my daughter. It appears they really want her to attend. I am hoping I maybe can use that to possibly get some more funds. If not I am not sure it is a smart decision to take on that debt.
@DBY2017 some might disagree with my suggestions but from experience and others experience email both financial aid and the head of Stamps on the same email. You have some leverage if your daughter received one of the few amazing offers and they are flying her out. If you are going with then you can plead your case in person. I just see it as unfair to your daughter to go through that then have her know you can’t afford it. I assume she knows that currently. I really don’t think any student will have 8k personal expenses. She can get art supplies through her department. There might be small grants for that. She can loan out a computer. She can get book loaners or buy used books… There is always a way. But no one from Michigan can help her if you don’t contact the above together. The department does not want to lose one of their first choices for the Stamps scholarship! They have personal donors also that might not be listed. Trust me on this. They picked her for a reason and pride comes into the equation. I have been there at another school with my bfa highly talented student (parent pride here).
I think you suggested you have a yearly figure that you could afford earlier in the thread. See if Michigan can work with that or at least get close. Kids do make Fund me pages for college. I have seen many with several thousands of dollars for college.
One last suggestion… If they exhaust all avenues then call housing and see if they can decrease her costs there. I have seen it happen. Also not sure what the rules for Michigan are but if she is an RA in housing I think her housing is free. Maybe not ideal but something to explore. But you are correct. It is not worth going into debt over if she has others choices. . Best of luck.
@DBY2017 Is she going to the Amaizin Blue Preview next month? It is a great experience and they pay for air travel and the hotel for the first night. I think the second night is in a dorm with current students. They invite some of the top scholarship winners from different schools and the space is limited. Glad that she responded promptly and got the spot reserved.
Is there a separate site for transfer equivalencies to the college of engineering? I’ve noticed every course that I checked on https://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx doesn’t have engineering on the right column with all the other schools (LSA, Music, Architecture, etc…). Or maybe I’m missing somethi
I don’t believe so, it’s for the Stamps school of Art scholarship weekend. It’s in a few weeks. Very grateful and she is going but to be honest I am kind of reluctant. It’s actually the lowest merit aid she has gotten and UM is the most expensive. They know she is from OOS and it still going to be a lot for us. Not to be ungreatful but 12,500 is a drop in the bucket. You would think for spending that kind of money to fly my daughter back and fourth it would be something huge. I don’t want her to get built up only to be dissapointed. I actually called FA this morning and didn’t get a lot of answers, they basically told me their FA is pretty final and it could change when we officially submit our tax forms but the form submission is mostly to verify what you put down. They also told me her scholarship may not be stackable because we are OOS, they are waiting to hear what the official policy with be next year. The #2 Art school in the country has offered her double and their OOS cost is 20k less a year to attend.
Wow… Congrats for your daughter. It seems then she knows she is going to another great school and it won’t be a financial burden on you. It is also great that, that scholarship can be passed on to someone else that can use it.
It is, but UM is her first choice and we think it’s the best fit for her. VCU is a long ways away from us. I grew up in Toledo and have a lot family near Ann Arbor. We have no one even close to Richmond, VA.
Is there a separate site for transfer equivalencies to the college of engineering? I’ve noticed every course https://www.ugadmiss.umich.edu/TCE/Public/CT_TCESearch.aspx doesn’t have the CoE included on the far right column with the other colleges. Or am I just missing something…
@DBY2017 You can submit a financial aid appeal. I know you called, but they can’t make any decisions based on a phone call. Send a very nice letter stating your special circumstances that they may have overlooked or that have come up since you submitted the FA forms. Ask for a “professional judgment” (that’s the official phrase). They may adjust the aid.
By the way, being OOS is not considered a special circumstance. 40% of the students are from OOS. Having a bigger merit offer somewhere else is not a special circumstance. UM’s high price tag is not a special circumstance. UM being a better fit for your D is not a special circumstance. The special circumstance for which you are asking for professional judgment has to be relevant to your family’s financial situation. Examples: Excessive medical expenses, death of a parent, unemployment, artificially high income for the Fafsa year due to a one-time bonus or disbursement, recent entry into your current income category (with much lower income in all previous years).
This is what it says on the lsa honors page!
