University of Michigan Chances?

Hi all - if anyone could chance me that would be great! I am applying to University of Michigan for class of 2021
I am a white American female, although I am going to school in the UK and have been for all of high school
4.4 GPA
29 Composite ACT (32 English, 31 Math, 27 Reading and 25 Science)

  • I am retaking the ACT on Saturday for a higher score
I am doing the full IB diploma, I’m applying from an international school in London (don’t know if that means anything for admissions)
  • I won’t be sending my IB scores because they don’t come out until July
    EC’s:
  • theatre (lead-roles in every school production since freshman year)
  • varsity softball for all four years of high school
  • editor-in-chief of the school newspaper
  • travelled to Namibia (southern Africa) for a service project, fundraised for this for all of junior year
  • national honors society

I am applying for the Musical Theatre program, I know it’s incredibly hard to get into but I have a lot of experience and quite strong supplements that I will be sending - any thoughts?

*** 30 on the ACT, not 29

What college are you applying to with UMich? Also, have you already applied? I thought of a really cool prompt for an essay you could do if you haven’t.

Here are stats taken right from the website. Get that ACT up and you’ll have a better chance.

hey! i’m apply to the school of music, theatre, and dance - specifically for their musical theatre program. I would love to hear your idea for a prompt!!!

@chilonbos23 whatever you write about always ask yourself “so what”. During our tour a few weeks ago at Michigan they said they receive so many applications and read them all. Many of them sound the same, so make yours “you” and always be critical of yourself and say “so what, who cares” YOU do so make it personal and all about you. Why would Michigan benefit from you being on campus, in the program, part of the community. You’ll do great!

Your stats are fine for SMTD, as they have lower average stats than Michigan as a whole. (Incoming SMTD freshman fall 2016 average GPA 3.67, average ACT 29. See http://www.music.umich.edu/prospective_students/admissions/ug/app_proc/acad_prep.htm for more info.) Your video recordings that you upload to the Decision Desk and subsequent audition will be a much larger factor in your acceptance. Make sure you are following all the application instructions for SMTD at http://www.music.umich.edu/prospective_students/admissions/ug/app_proc/app_proc.htm, particularly the December 1 deadline. Good luck!

For the arts, a respectable gpa and ACT are expected, but not with the same kind of competitive academic rigor as other pursuits. Your GPA and ACT are fine for Musical Theater. What will matter, is your video portfolio and audition. Same with STAMPS, dance, etc. Not to say you don’t have to be an excellent student, but having demonstrable talent in the art you want to study will figure in largely. That said, it never hurts to retake the ACT and squeeze another point or two out if you can. But I honestly think you’re ok with your numbers as is. Good luck!
