University of Michigan Chances

Hi Folks,

My son applied EA to Michigan with preferred school being Ross. Looking for some insights/chance assessments. He is OOS…

SAT: 1430 (670 V / 760 M)
GPA: 4.15 weighted (all A’s, B’s never a C)
Class Rank: top 15%
APs: US History, English Lit, US Gov, Seminar, Research, Psychology
Honors: Bio, Chem, Physics, Calculus, etc. - all remaining classes

Extracurriculars:

  • Eagle Scout (BSA)
  • Golf Team Captain (2yrs) - All league (2x), Team MVP (2x), Four Year Starter
  • Tennis Team Captain - Varsity doubles starter (2 years)
  • National and French National Honor Societies
  • Many cited community service efforts
  • Solid teacher recommendations, essays

I know UM is a very hard proposition, particularly for OOS. Viewing this as a stretch. Just looking for some candid feedback. Thanks! Good luck all.

UMich uses unweighted GPA. What is his unweighted GPA?

Also, your son has applied to Ross Preferred admission. What home school did he apply to (LSA, CoE, etc.)?

The 25/75 SAT range for the Class of 2023 was 1,380-1,540 and the average unweighted GPA was 3.9. The OOS acceptance rate was 19%.

Hi -

Thanks for the response. His home school is LSA. His unweighted GPA is 3.8.

I think he is probably on the outside looking in, but you do have to have some reaches.

I think your student’s stats are good enough to make the first cut, but a lot hinges on the Ross application. I think that what separates the good applicants from the rest is that they have really done their homework on why they want to attend Ross specifically (and not just any business school) and how they are a good fit for the Ross culture. The essays should clearly demonstrate all these things, show uniqueness, and show that they really want to be at Ross.

Some other things your student should do are: take a school tour (make sure to register), visit with any admissions officers visiting your area, and go to the Ross website (I think your son can sign up for emails). UM knows that the kids who get into Ross probably have a number of other good offers, so I think it helps if they know Ross is your #1 (only say if that is true).

BTW, there is a good chance that your kid will get deferred. This does not automatically mean he will be rejected from Ross or UM. It doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed for RD, but don’t consider your student out of the running. Continue to show interest and keep engaging with the school.

My kid is 3rd year Ross BBA and has really enjoyed their time at Ross and UM in general. Best of luck!

OOS acceptances for UM are ridiculously competitive, and I would assume even more so for Ross. He will 100% get deferred EA- that’s just how Mich rolls. He might get in RD but as previously mentioned the acceptance rate is like 19% and he is not going to be on the top of the heap, unless he is good enough to continue his sport there or has an amazing accomplishment of some kind- but I assume you would have mentioned that.
It’s fine to reach but don’t let him get his hopes up and make sure he has other choices.

Just some numbers.

For the Class of 2022, there were 4,163 enrolled students in LSA. Ross had 447 enrolled students in the same freshman class. We just don’t know how many applicants there were/are for Ross specifically.

A 3.8/1,430 is “in the fight.” Though it’s probably slightly below the median, just in terms of hard stats. Best of luck to your son.

One other thing. There are roughly 40,000 EA apps. UMich accepts about 1/2 of their freshman class during EA or about 7,500-8,000 students. The other 1/2 +/- are accepted during the RD process, which includes the EA deferred pool.

So, 32,000 +/- EA apps are either rejected or deferred and I/we think the bulk of the 32,000 are deferred. A rejection is rarely posted here on CC when EA results are released in December. But EA rejections do happen outside of our bubble here.
