University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

^ Was that the next wave, or the next LSA wave? Thought it was the latter but maybe misremembering the post.

Also, do waves tend to come out every Friday or do they skip or no discernible pattern?

@JBStillFlying. My educated guess is that they will follow the dates listed for Ross announcements. So the next one being February 15. I am guessing they are trying to coordinate this more efficiently. But saying that you will notice some getting accepted like sprinkle in here and there which makes this whole process more agonizing.

There was a poster that was surprised to be accepted since he forgot about the February 1st date. I would suggest this and when you get an email then you will know. Otherwise constant checking will wear on you. Good luck to you and your family

“Waves” do not come every Friday. I don’t even think there was a release last year around 2/15.

The next Ross release will be 3/1 and I do agree with @Knowsstuff that UMich LSA/CoE MAY, MAY, time their release with the Ross release on 3/1, which would be similar to last year.

@sushiritto… Yes I agree. My mistake. I thought there was the 15th on there.

So I confirmed with last year’s thread. There was a LSA/CoE release on 2/1 and 3/1. Unfortunately, there were no releases between those two dates.

But nothing is set in stone. I’d still check each Friday after 5:00 PM EST just in case and watch for those disappearing decision tabs.

I wish you all the best of luck.

I’m newish to CC, does anyone know if there’s a threat for accepted students? Thanks!

@sushiritto should we assume no more kinesiology admits from the deferred pool?

@sushiritto… Does it seem there was an emphasis on higher Stat students that were accepted this weekend then in the past? Curious what you think.

I went back to last year’s 2022 EA Deferred thread and checked the stats of the 2/1 release and I agree the stats for this first 2/1 RD release for the Class of 2023 appears higher to me as well. Of course, the samples are small here on CC, and not everyone posts their stats, but last year’s (2022) 2/1 RD release had SAT scores of 1,400-1,530 and ACT scores of 32-35. The scores for the Class of 2023, in this 2/1 RD release appear to be roughly mid-1,500’s.

I didn’t post GPA’s because for the Class of 2022, I saw a lot of weighted GPA’s and they were all fairly high.

As for the “why?”, I’m shrugging my shoulders. That’s a great question. I’m assuming the stats of each class are both very close, but does it denote a change in UMich admissions philosophy is not really clear to me. Again, we rely on posts of students each season and maybe the samples sets aren’t compatible for comparison.

@mom3boyz I don’t follow kinesiology as closely, but I wouldn’t assume there won’t be any more admissions. I assume there will be more kinesiology admissions, just as there will be for all the schools. BTW, I think if I had to do it all over again, I’d probably pick a kinesiology as my degree. Love the subject.

So @sushiritto and @Knowsstuff , do you think the 2/1 admits were the ones that were deferred for yield protection? If the theory was that these high stats kids probably applied ED to an Ivy, then they would have had the chance to withdraw by now.

@momzilla2D… Love your name… Makes me laugh
I don’t think there is any proof that the ones accepted were the ones also deferred if I am understanding the question correctly. I. just happen to notice that this batch of students stats seemed to be mostly OOS and very high stats. Even though CC is a microcosm of the real world to me its still telling what Michigan was going after. It seemed the instate students (not all) had let’s say… More normal Michigan Stats.

Also the reaction from those accepted seemed to be like a positive they were going to attend. There wasn’t a lot of the “let’s wait and see” posts.

So as far as yields go I am hoping those accepted will go. Many in the wings want that opportunity. Last year it seemed a lot of very high stats kids were rejected and wait listed maybe due to the yield assumption.

For what it’s worth, my son (deferred EA, COE) has high stats (1590 SAT, 4.0 UW) and we still haven’t heard anything. So agonizing. Since we’re in state and they accept so many more in-state than OOS, I was really hoping he’d get in this round.

There did seem to be a lot more OOS and LSA acceptances–though, as some have noted, I’m basing that on a pretty small sample.

Yep. Probably looking at more Coe next round, I assume. Hang in there. This is just the beginning not the end. Did your son send in a Loci? Just curious. Seemed that a lot of accepted students said they sent one in.

Thanks, @Knowsstuff. He hasn’t (yet), in part b/c the deferral email seemed to advise against it. But with his high stats, I wonder if it might be helpful to let them know that UM is at the top of his list.

Holy cow @TwoHearted your S seems like an anomaly to me. What am I missing there? Is CoE downsizing their class? Too many males already? UMich leaning even more on OOS? Your S’s HS have a historically poor yield to UMich? I’m astonished, but I hope your S gets accepted in the next wave.

if your student is deferred now, how likely they will get into Ross if they get accepted in a later round?

Thanks, @sushiritto. We did wonder after he applied if he should have just applied for Math in LSA rather than CS in COE, since CS seems to be SO popular and the applicant pool probably both enormous and strong. But too late now.

Hopefully there’s still plenty of spots left in COE for in-state males with his stats.

I’m in CA and the one thing of note is that the UC system had fewer apps this year. UCLA had their first decrease in a decade. I wonder what that means for UMich. Will they have less apps too? If so, what then would their strategy be for the Class of 2023?

@twohearted. That is what I thought. My kid… Telling him to write a Loci. They might think Michigan’s a safety for him. As long as he had good ecs and a great essay…

He can look up his regional person. Short /to the point and that he is planning on going there when accepted. If you notice I didn’t say “if”.
