@mom3boyz even though it seems like it I don’t think your at a disadvantage. There are plenty of applications they still have to go through. People get accepted into Ross in April. This is just the beginning not the end of the process.
@sushiritto what is the number of UC applications this year? How did you know?
@sushiritto… I don’t think it will affect this class. I would have to look but thought applications were up again for Michigan. There are so many qualified students they will have enough to pick from. I just wonder if Legacy will come more into play if decrease applications in general.
Did anyone who applied to nursing hear back on Friday?
I got deferred from u of m couple months ago with a 3.97uw and 4.1 w gpa. Also I got 1300 SAT and 28 on ACT. What is the chance of me getting accepted in RD with the Hail Scholarship?
Just to tag on I was deferred EA COE. Haven’t heard back yet and I am instate with a 35 ACT and a 4.0UW. Really hoping I hear back I’m getting a bit worried as I have wanted to go to Umich since middle school.
@Nhatrang The info link has been posted on CC. The 2019 UC app #’s by school are available.
@Knowsstuff I mention that UC app drop, because folks seem to be explaining it by saying that the Year 2000 was the year of the Golden Dragon, so the volume of apps increased even more than usual. So, my thought was that many universities across the country may have a slight drop in apps for the Class of 2023, including UMich.
@sr2592 hey I am applying from UAE as well! But CoE though…congrats to your son! I wish I get the good news soon too, this is my absolute dream.
My son (LSA OOS) with stellar stats and ECs wasn’t accepted in this wave. I wonder if this was because he didn’t send in a LOCI, or his midterm grades were only received on 1/26, or they’re just going full-blown yield protection on him.
@yucca10. There is a possibility his application was not even reviewed yet. Being OOS and getting accepted is very tough. It seems if you review the ones being accepted that a lot of them stated they sent in Loci. Many were also accepted without their midterm grades being accepted. It is so tough with so many qualified applicants. I would think the essays count for more then people assume with so many kids having similar stats. Remember, this is just the start of this not the end.
@Nhatrang here’s the article about apps being down at UC https://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-edu-uc-applications-20190131-story.html Hopefully you can read it and it’s not behind a paywall. But it doesn’t tell the whole story of what the numbers mean. For instance, most of the UCs actually had a HIGHER number of applications - only UCLA, UCSC and UCB had fewer. But the UC as a whole had 3% fewer. It could mean that students are applying to fewer campuses - they don’t explain that in the article.
@Knowsstuff I don’t care since he’ll likely go elsewhere anyway (UMich was close to the top but not the top choice), but I have a high opinion of UMich, and it will bother me if they explicitly state in their deferral letter not to send anything besides grades, and then it’ll turn out they actually give preference to kids who did send a LOCI. I don’t like this game. If they want it, why can’t they say so. Of course, we’ll likely never know if it actually provides an advantage.
I found that link finally for the UC detailed breakdown:
Accepted Class of 2023
LSA
OOS
1560 SAT
4.0 GPA UW senior mid-year; 3.95 junior year
No LOCI sent but called admissions on phone.
The overall number is unduplicated applications.
Here are some observations from the UC numbers:
- Number of students applying for UC system decreases. This could indicate the decrease in total high school students, at least in California.
- Students are applying for more, not fewer campuses, because the percentage drop in UC system is larger than any of individual campuses.
- Students are shifting to less competitive campuses. Probably students are scared by the low acceptance rates at campuses such as UCB, and UCLA.
I did detect this minor change from the early LOCI response to a later LOCI response:
Early
Later
International (U.S. citizen living overseas) COE still deferred.
I was deferred EA but just got into the college of engineering two days ago! There’s still
hope, good luck everyone!
no LOCI or midterm grades sent
There have been several iterations of this question above but did everyone who received recent admission have a portal change Friday and then an email on saturday? My daughter is OOS LSA deferred, 34 ACT, 4.0 unweighted; received the so called good deferral email; sent LOCI and then received the “still advocating for your admission” email. Daughter still deferred status.
