University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

@kigem your counselor should be able to do it

Hey so I am a little bit late to this thread but I just wanted to join the chat because I fell into the rabbit hole of the UM “waves”." Honestly, this admissions process is so confusing so could anyone explain it to me? I don’t really think I have a chance anymore. Does anyone think I have a chance? I’m OOS (NC), 32 ACT, 4.0 uw, 4.4 w, 3 APS (school only offers 3), 6 community college classes, 3-year varsity athlete with strong ECs. I honestly won’t be that hurt if I don’t get in since I got into UNC haha.

@heidihammy, congrats on UNC. You and MANY others still have a chance, since UM should still be accepting several thousand more applicants in March and April. (At least that’s my understanding–and my sincere hope.)

Is there typically a March 1st release and then a March 29th?

@jdag11 Yes, that’s been the typical pattern. And those dates are the same as the Ross admission dates too. Also, if the pattern holds, March 1st SHOULD consist of no rejections or waitlisted applicants. Those seem to be introduced in the March 29th release. Notwithstanding the typical pattern, occasionally a few “random” decisions are released in between the larger “waves.”

@cdr2001 I heard back on February 2nd, Chemistry as my major. I’m excited! I’m visiting next month

I heard back in February 2nd out of state applicant

UM waves are as unpredictable as a tsunami. I have heard from someone close to the faculty at UM that every week they are admitting few applicants and the waves are only for the left overs when they do not find sufficient numbers to fill the classes. To keep the yield rate good, they want to be sure if the applicant is serious enough to join the university. They do not care about LOCI or mid-term grades. I think UM doesn’t deserve the ranking it is currently enjoying.

@smaralec That to me doesn’t make a lot of sense. They do admit smaller number of people here and there but historically have large “waves” as already stated. They seem to have more students then they can admit according to their wait list numbers. Filling seats is not the issue. Every school is trying to admit people they feel really want to attend.

@smaralec I disagree. If you state in your LOCI that you will go to that school if admitted, then the AO is more likely to pick you to admit over someone who did not send one at all.

@Knowsstuff I do agree they will have large waves. Most of the universities have ‘more students than they can admit’ yet except LOCI how can you attempt to ascertain if someone really wants to attend. Why can’t they announce when they would be ready with the ‘wave’ instead of keeping everyone guessing.

@joelen09 I am not sure if just by LOCI they would make a judgement about an applicant’s wish to attend a particular college. I had sent mine. They go by stats also. In my case I have 42/42 in IBDP. Can’t hope to get more as its the max. My SAT1 scores are 1520. SAT II are 800 and 800 in Maths and Physics. Their average intake for CS every year is much below my stats. They might be thinking I would not stick to their Uni if offered a chance and may move on. So i reckon they deferred me,I cant improve upon my mid-term as i have the same max grades. That too was sent in mid Jan.

Is it too late for me to send a LOCI? I stupidly put it off since I planned a college visit on MLK day but a snowstorm prevented us from leaving my driveway out in the country. UMich is my greatest hope for college. I had 35 ACT and 3.9 GPAuw. Good recommendations and decent honors/ecs. I go to a very rigorous app-based high school. I had 3 AP scores but I failed to report them on the common app and I also reported my weighted GPA which may have appeared strange. Is it worth clarifying this and my interest? If UMich wants serious students I would be confused as to why they wouldn’t care about LOCIs.

Who knows if it is 100% true or not, but if you read the Michigan website, they suggest that sending in additional information does not impact their decision, and is possibly slowing down the process.

“Please also note that we do not need any extra documents from you unless specifically requested, as they will not impact your final decision.”

Hello everyone! I have thumbing through this discussion for a while but have yet to post anything so I thought now would be the time to do so! I am a deferred in-state applicant that applied about 1.5 weeks before the EA date.

Ross hopeful!!
31 ACT
1 sport
7 clubs
leadership roles outside of school
3 jobs
etc etc

My high school is quite competitive and like many others, I found myself thinking “How did that person get in and I didn’t?!”

I sent my LOCI on 2/7/2019 as one of my friends who is in the class of 2022 did so last year after being deferred and then eventually got accepted. I got a response this morning saying that it would be added to my file, to still look at other options though I am a strong candidate, and I will receive a decision (good or bad) by early April.

@smaralec from my point of view LOCI are done to late. Students should get in a habit of sending in an LOI. Yes a letter of interest like right after a school comes to your school or you go to a fair or you reach out to a professor etc etc. Then send an LOCI if needed after you get deferred. Now you have at least 2 legitimate contacts with your AO. But everyone waits and sends in desperation Loci after their deferred.

@CO1234. I think personally this statement gets read incorrectly. Yes, don’t send any more documents…
Like referral letters, grades, awards, cures for cancer studies… It doesn’t say anything about not letting them know your still interested to come there. Why do you think they have standard form letters to address the LOCI? If they state someday “please don’t send in an LOCI” and any other documents or we will throw your applicants in the garbage… Then I wouldn’t do it.

Some schools like Berkeley and Georgia Tech make a point of saying if your still interested to come here after being deferred please let your AO know. This way the kids that don’t send in anything by a certain time they can take out of their applicant pool.

how abt an loci for Ross?

Better than YOU sending a loci is having your GC contact his/her point person at Mich to tell them that you will attend if admitted. The applicant’s word is not as strong as the GC’s word. The GC has a reputation to uphold, and your GC won’t do it for you unless s/he trusts you.

@brantly i am surprised with your advice. I can’t read the mind of the AO’s but I would think the student needs to advocate for him/herself. Why would someone take the word of someone else that so and so will attend if admitted? Only the student can say he/she will attend. This isn’t the recommendation letter when you vouch for someone’s academic strength and character. This is the ultimate decision that can change the course of your life, if i was the AO i wouldn’t take anyone’s words but the student’s.
