Not Impressed, my daughter was accepted EA 2 years ago with stats that were clearly inferior to my younger daughter who in deferred. But my older daughter had some unique qualities and I believe her essays made her stand out. It’s not just a statistics game. If so, Michigan could fill out the entire class with out of state top notch candidates during the EA period. They cannot possibly NOT defer top stat kids so that they can at least allow the RD kids a chance to get it. It’s really just math. And for the kids to feel “offended” by this, that is really their problem…They sound entitled to me. My daughter has 3.9 unweighted, 4.3 weighted. 4-year varsity tennis player and good test scores. From a top high school in the Detroit burbs. She is not offended, she will accept immediately if admitted. Anyone who is applying to Michigan should realize that tons of “superstars” will not get it due to the numbers involved. Accept it and move on.
We feel your pain. The spread of decision dates across schools is frustrating. There isn’t anything we can do about it, but it is hard to hear from 1/2 of your schools by January and then wait until April for the other half. It’s too bad there isn’t a more consistent schedule. Many schools have already started admitted students days. Again, it’s out of our control but it’s still frustrating. April decision notifications don’t leave much time to make a visit either, not to mention having to put down housing deposits before you know if you are even going to that school. Hopefully there will be a wave soon and we can all move forward, regardless of the decision.
@BizBoundMama That is a great question but it is one that I don’t think anyone knows the answer to. I have also seen posts questioning whether the likelihood of admittance to Ross for those who are deferred and later are accepted in March or April affects the likelihood of admittance to Ross, but have not seen it answered. One would think that the later in time you app goes to Ross the fewer spots available and the chances of Ross acceptance will diminish, but who really knows other than Ross AOs. I think the whole process relating to Ross admissions is mysterious.
@BizBoundMama you most likely didn’t get a reply since no one here really knows the answer. You can Call/email admissions for an answer I would presume. My best guest though is no. First you would get accepted then the file goes to Ross /reviewed then you get their answer. This could be very quick though. You can search last year’s Ross acceptances and see if this has happened. It doesn’t sound familiar to me though. Good Luck.
@notimpressed Yes, Cal and UCLA release that same message every year after a few students are accepted with scholarships in February, IIRC. Could UMich (other than Ross, which provides exact release dates this year) give an exact date of release, sure, that would be great, but they also have RD releases (generally) on 2/1, 3/1, 4/1 and mid-April. The UC’s don’t have multiple earlier releases.
For the Class of 2022, UMich roughly accepted 8,000 of 40,000 applicants. However, no one knows how many students are deferred, but we here on CC assume it’s everyone, since no one posts an EA rejection. As @Knowsstuff mentioned above, CC is just a microcasm, a tiny corner, of the entire student population.
As I mentioned up thread, or maybe I said it on a different thread, UMich is the 2nd most chosen OOS school at our large public school in Silicon Valley. Lots of money here too. More kids chose UMich over most of the UC’s. Thankfully, my kid had multiple OOS and instate choices, a few with nice scholarships. We also did had a few waitlisted schools, which of course we ostensibly waited on, but my kid “locked on” to UMich from the start.
Why UMich for us? UMich has an $11 Billion endowment, the 8th largest in the US. A larger endowment than the entire 9-campus UC system. So, UMich has no budget issues and easily accessible resources such as advisors, math, science, writing tutors, internship and career center, etc. Problems getting classes or changing majors? Nope. Smaller class sizes than UC’s (15:1), yes! Housing problems? Expensive, but plentiful. A top notch medical center, engineering/CS dept. and 40 LSA programs that are top 10.
UMich has built many brand new facilities (e.g., biological sciences bldg.). The Board of Regents just approved a new building on Central Campus for more classroom space.
https://record.umich.edu/articles/new-central-campus-building-include-innovative-classrooms
Also, new recreation facilities on the North Campus and the Intramural Building. They just approved rebuilding the Central Campus recreation building too. That was a big plus for us, since we’re BIG exercise fans.
And you get that Midwest Big10 “rah rah” spirit, which my kid was very much interested in. Top sports teams like basketball (lost final to Villanova), football (Top 10-15), tennis, wrestling, hockey (final four last year), etc teams. Sports are also BIG in our family too. Anyway, you just don’t get that type of spirit at any UC. In fact, at least in terms of football and basketball, the Pac-12 has been trending down for a decade (+/-).
And finally, Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns in the US.
Waiting stinks, no doubt about it. But the potential reward is wonderful.
@notimpressed. It seems like California has delay in their answers this year. Maybe it’s a regional thing. We went through this with Berkeley and Georgia Tech two years ago. My sons at Michigan engineering now but he got sick of waiting for their answers also. He was already accepted to Michigan. He just wanted to compare apples to apples per se. Berkeley finally rejected him and Georgia Tech wait listed him. GT sent an email with step by step instructions on what to do if he wanted to stay on the wait list. One was a LOCI to the regional counselor.
GT has some of the best admission blogs. I suggest reading this one and the links to the two within it. They do a great job with this.
Good Luck.
Great Blog @Knowsstuff - very timely and good perspective to keep in mind during this difficult time for many applicants. Thanks.
@notimpressed No need to feel insulted by a deferral. The acceptance rate is about 20% for out of state. Your nephew is not the only one who has high stats. Besides, ever hear of yield protection?
anyone else’s wolverine access down?
Mine portal is down too
As is mine. Is this the case for all applicants?
Routine weekend maintenance.
My daughter received that same email. She sent in a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) and 2 more letters of recommendation, after being deferred. She ended up being admitted RD into the school of Kinesiology. I think it helped???
@lovecolorado. Congrats. When was she accepted?,. Lots of people from Kinesiology waiting for a reply here. Thx.
@Knowsstuff, Thanks! She learned she was accepted March 29th. A few of her friends were accepted that day too. It seemed to be a pretty big wave of notifications on that day. Good luck!!!
@lovecolorado. That’s great. I was just wondering if it was after that wave since lots of students were asking about that field. Good Luck to your child. It’s a great school.
So she was accepted last year? March 29 is not here yet.
If one gets the Cal message re: a few admits occurred but your app is still in the process, but not the UCLA message, is that a bad sign from UCLA?
@StevenW Yes, I was referring to last year. Someone was asking when she received her acceptance. It seemed like last year there was a big wave on March 29th, not just for Kinesiology, but some of her friends in LSA too. There was a group of her friends admitted early decision and then one or two in Feb., but the majority were on 3/29. She went to a HS here in Michigan where there were about 20 or so admitted to U of M.
so to send my mid-year grades in through parchment, do i send them to Umich or common app, because I’m not seeing any way to send it through the common app
