@bandgeekwriter call the admissions office or email them and say “this is my verbal ED commitment.” I did this, my friend did this last year and she got in. Hoping for an offer of admission myself.
@Knowsstuff Thanks for the input+ Yes they all have to keep working. Hopefully U Mich works out. He got into his safe schools for engineering and they are solid so all good here. Been a ride for sure, and it sounds like we have another 4 months. Happy Holidays!
@kyledad No problem. Be there, done that. My son’s in Michigan engineering and as I told him when he applied, “you will get accepted, deferred, denied and wait listed from some really great colleges”.
Hi! I am a bit worried about my 1430 SAT score negatively impacting my application. I have very strong extracurriculars and fairly solid grades. With a small connection, what do you think about my odds? Michigan is my dream school and I’m really hoping it works out!
I highly doubt I am going to get in, based on Naviance I have about a 10% chance, though if I got in, I would go in a heartbeat. One thing I noticed is that we couldn’t actually declare a major. I went back and looked at my application and I could only put 2 subjects I was interested in.Which is a bummer since I want to major in history, I wrote a great essay on this and I was hoping this would help me (Michigan has the biggest history department in the country, it is my dream school) – but I’m not listed as a declared history major…
@mmanning17 your score is very good. You are well within the range of a typical accepted student. Don’t worry about increasing your score because they just want to know that you are capable of Michigan work in the context of your holistic application. Your score already shows that you are a highly capable student, so increasing it won’t necessarily help your case. Also, I found this information on the college board website. Hope this helped!

So I applied for EA and I was wondering what my chances were for admission.
ACT: 34 composite (35 English, 33 Math, 36 Reading, 33 Science, 9 Essay)
GPA: Currently 3.7, but should be around 3.85 at the end of this senior year semester.
(I had difficulties sophomore year but caught up junior year and have all As this year for all APs)
APs: AP Calc, AP Stats, AP Physics C, AP English, AP MicroEcon, AP US History
Fair amount of volunteering with tutoring and other school stuff
Multiple volunteering clubs and made my own club
High key stressing out like everyone else so any comments or opinions would be great.
I hear that decisions for EA are rumored to come back on the 19th…can anyone second that?
Rumor about decisions coming out on 19 Dec…
My DD will second and third that…?
Yes, December 19th.
Just Received this email from UM:
"Greetings from the University of Michigan!
As one of 583,000 proud living alumni of the University of Michigan, you know firsthand the value of a U-M education. Every year, we are fortunate to review tens of thousands of applications from prospective students – many from enthusiastic alumni families – who are hoping to attend this university and engage with all that it has to offer.
This year, we have the pleasure of receiving your student’s Early Action application. I imagine that the decision to apply came after hearing about your positive experiences here at U-M, and I thank you for your continued support of our mission to serve the common good through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving, and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
Because of the high volume of applications we receive, we want you to know a decision may not reach your student until spring. While our team is busy giving each application a thoughtful, holistic review, I want to share with you some additional information for alumni families. This list of Frequently Asked Questions addresses our continually increasing competitiveness, our review process, and other issues related to enrollment that you may find helpful.
Additionally, because our transfer pool is growing, there is an opportunity for your student to transfer to Michigan later if they are not initially admitted. We hope you share this option with your student.
Thank you again, and Go Blue!"

Just received that as well regarding my son, who applied EA. I contacted the admissions dep’t (via chat) and they confirmed that EA decisions will be sent out by 12/24. Confusing email.
So did I; hopefully this was sent to all parents of legacy EA applicants. Did any UM alums with children applying EA NOT receive this email? Mine sent at 2:30 EST today.
I thought the email was a little confusing as well. No need to share it with my stressed daughter. Fingers crossed.
They are just saying that some applicants will be deferred when they release the results from EA. Last year, most of the EA applicants were deferred. I don’t believe anyone was “denied” in the EA round last year.
I got it, too. It is poorly done and confusing. Seems like they’re trying to prepare us alums for deferred decisions. It seems unlikely that I’ll share it with my daughter.
I got it too and found it stress-inducing. Not planning to share with S19.
Agreed. Not a great showing. Comes off as pompous, and it’s so poorly written that the goal of the letter is unclear. If you MUST send such a letter shortly before EA results come out, why not just say “EA decisions will be coming soon, there are three possibilities, thanks for your support”?
I have a son currently at UM and am an alum. We received the exact same email when he was an applicant. UM does this every year.
Here is the response I got from an admissions rep via chat: “U-M is cognizant of the fact that many alums are passionate about their children being offered admission and is preparing them for the fact that typically U-M postpones many applicants during the Early Actions process and these postponed applicants may then not receive their final decisions until April.” So yes, sounds like preparing everyone for deferred decisions. Could’ve just gone ahead with deferrals without this confusing letter. Oh well …
