University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

I received same email. OOS/Multiple legacy here and high stats so prepared for the possible deferral.

Why does U or M take this approach in the first place? If they cannot handle the EA load by Dec. 24,or they want to see what applicants drop out based on ED decisions, why do they establish 12/24 as the decision release date? Why not make it Jan 15 or Jan 31 have a more reasonable group accepted early?

I think maybe they have this early notification date because the Honors College is space-limited. Early application to Honors is therefore vital and you can’t apply till you’re formally admitted by the University.

My husband and I both also received it! At first, I thought it was a hint he was deferred. This thread gave me some hope after seeing we were not the only ones receiving it!

Also received as an alum. Unnecessarily provocative. Was not uneasy on my until I received this email. Will not share with s-19

I’m curious when UMich started this heavy deferral of EA applicants? My son is a Junior, Engineering, and maybe we were naive, but I don’t remember that being the case when he applied and was accepted (Fall 2015)?

What is the point of Early Action, which U-M promotes as a way for students to get an early decision, if they’re only going to defer everybody? Either don’t offer it, figure out how to keep up with the workload of applications, or offer an Early Decision option. Sheesh.

For those stating that you will not share the letter with your D or S, I am afraid most students check this site anyway. So I guess you did just share the letter.

Best of luck to everyone next week! Go Blue!

They obviously don’t defer everyone. I’m a OOS parent from the last EA admissions cycle (Class of 2022) and not an alum. But we were lucky enough to receive an EA acceptance and having that acceptance early sure made the holidays and the last few months of the admissions cycle much less stressful.

Best of luck to you all!

Alum and parent of an In-State applicant to College of Engineering and I did not receive an email today. I recall receiving a similar one two years ago when another child was applying to LS&A.

@altaskier did your other child get in?

Yes, older kid was accepted In December.

Is it possible it was only sent to deferred applicants who are legacies??

Hey all! My mom was sent a very confusing/terrifying email about the “high volume” of applicants and how I should brace myself for deferral. She is an alum. Is it possible that I will be deferred/rejected because of the time that I submitted my application? I submitted October 25 and I got an email from Umich stating my application was complete on the 31st. My GPA and SAT score are within the middle 50th percentile.

Don’t worry. See the two pages of thread above about this topic. Seems like all of the alum parents received this.

Our daughter applied EA last year. We are in state, and her dad is an alum. We did NOT receive this letter last year - and her application WAS deferred EA (she was accepted in February 2018).

I was accepted EA last year, and had no legacy connection. I did not receive this letter.

No, my understanding is you can also get denied or accepted along with the possibility of deferral. I imagine the strongest candidates will get the acceptances, the more borderline candidates will get deferred, and the not even close candidates will get denials.

@HopeTwoGoBlue It’s been at least since the high school class of 2015, and probably a little earlier.

. It’s important to realize that EA (and ED) are primarily for the benefit of the college, even though it is promoted as a benefit to students. It indeed may turn out to be a benefit to some students, but, truly, that’s not the primary motivation. It’s not offered out of altruism.
