University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2020

I don’t think it could hurt to send it again within the next week. If you do and are sending it to your regional rep., you could kindly ask for a confirmation from them so you know it was received. I would do this if it’s really bothering you.

@Winky1 Thank you! I actually just received a response

What kind of response did you get? What did it say?

Do they respond to all the students who wrote back after getting deferred?

This was the response:

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan, please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application, along with the recent accomplishments you shared. The University received a record breaking 30,000 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Be assured that we use a holistic and comprehensive review process and we looked at all aspects of your application before a decision was made & we considered your grades, curriculum, test scores, essays, and extra-curricular involvement as part of our evaluation.

Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your mid-year grades when they become available so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application, there is nothing further we need from you at this time. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April.

Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also to also explore the other opportunities available to them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Best,

Does anyone know how many students they accept early action?

I dont think they make that information public, the speculation is about 1/3rd of the class in a particular year is admitted EA and rest are considered with the RD application pool. Now that 30K applied EA, I wonder if the RD numbers are going to be steady at 20K applicants? They must be watching the trend and depending on their calculations, they would start releasing decisions for high stats applicant decisions that were deferred

@hellolol I got that too. Does this mean that there is no chance that we hear back in January/February compared to April?

@hellolol, that was a nice response. Glad for you that it came.

I just received a response to my email from my regional director - in the email, I asked asked to gain a deeper understanding of the reasons behind the deferral and actually got a personal email back describing why in addition to him acknowledging new information and my continued interest.

Is it okay to ask why I was deferred? I feel like it’d be a little offputting, although I am dying to know.

@gabidecost The regional director actually told you why? Are you able to do anything to improve your standing by April?

@nodog28 I think we’ll just have to wait. No idea what’s going to happen

@whizkid98 Yes! I got a completely personal response to my inquiry. He did kinda hint at one thing and responded that my application was very strong except for one factor, but also said please feel free to follow up with any questions or concerns, so I kind of lightly asked if there were any changes I could make to strengthen my application.

@james1998iq I think if worded correctly you’d be able to ask without hurting your chances.

@desiindian597 Last year, around half of the 55000 applications came in for EA and the other half for RD. If the total application does not increase this year (which I doubt), there will be 25000 application for RD. The 10% increase in EA application may hint the increase in total application too.

@gabidecost he didn’t tell you what the “one factor” was? Or do you already know?

@HRSMom I already figured what the problem could’ve been (during my senior year, I do a co-op program which allows me a shortened schedule so I can dedicate more time to my job as Branding & E-Commerce Director for a business. I didn’t provide enough information about what I do for the co-op program initially) - so my regional director confirmed it for me.

Great, you can turn that into a positive!

@HRSMom While we’re talking, I have a question for you! (Or to anyone) This was in my response:

“If you haven’t already done so, please request to have an updated transcript with your first semester grades submitted. You can also notify me if you elect to make any changes to your schedule.”

Would you say that last sentence is almost hunting/pushing towards a schedule change and letting him know? I know that’s not just some standard comment they give to everyone.
