@kskillz Which is the shorter one?

Hey @PillagerGuy I remember you from the Cornell thread man. I got deferred too and I feel your pain. I have similar stats as you. Do you mind saying which so-called deferral letter you got? Did you get the one from the Vice-provost or admissions officer?

Here’s my letter:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2014. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer

Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

Is this the “good” one?

I got the Provost one, yeah. I seriously can’t deal with another semester of waiting and stress. This whole situation would be a lot better if I was accepted anywhere, but so far I’ve been rejected and Deferred. Maybe UMD will be kinder.

Which is the good deferral letter?

Can some please help me? I haven’t heard anything yet but my WA view credentials page changed this afternoon and it now shows under required materials " 7th semester grades". That would lead me to think I was deferred as our 7th semester isn’t over until jan 23. Has anyone’s WA who has been deferred now ask for 7th semester grades? Thx

Got deferred
GPA: 3.897 UW, Michigan weighted would’ve been around a 3.93
ACT: 30
ECs: Volunteer at hospital over 200 hours, Model UN treasurer, Opinion editor for the school newspaper, NHS, Volleyball and softball for two years, alter server at my church for 8 years
annnnnddddd I hate my life now

Seems like I am not alone…pillagerguy and Coder90…my stats are similiar to yours…there must be about 20,000 of us! I was rejected at Cornell…now deferred at UM. However, good news from UIUC. Maybe see you guys there!

@JCKTTCWW I was deferred and don’t have it. I don’t want to get your hopes up, but I would see that as more of a sign of you getting accepted, as your 7th semester/midyear grades would then be required. JMO

I think I screwed up bad and applied regular for UIUC. Honestly, at this point my confidence is really shaken. I have such a weird and unique schedule that I think it might be more poisonous to my application than I ever could have thought.

Here’s an excerpt from last years deferral thread:

"From what I understand, there IS a difference depending on the letter received.

There is a “good,” “medium,” and “bad” letter, although in previous years, applicants have been admitted as well as rejected with all three letters. The rankings are as follows:

“Good” letter: Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan ____ for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

“Medium:” We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan _____ for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

“Bad:” Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

This may not be true, just the information I’ve gathered from reading several threads, from this year and past years. "

Hopefully this will help you all!

Deferred. In-State. Go to a small, not-so-impressive high school. Got the “bad” letter.

UW 3.5 with a strong upward trend after sophomore year.
ACT 31
5 APs, Business Professionals of America Club secretary, class President, yearbook editor, cheer captain (varsity all 4 years, track and field captain (varsity all 4 years), Sunday school teacher, job, volunteer with habitat for humanity and local organizations, involved in musical theatre and show choir, competitive cheer, and student council.

@Brifes,

I would disagree with you. As one type of defer letter requires the applicant to provide 7th semester report, it is more like a defer rather an acceptance. I know all require to provide the final HS report before July for acceptance, but no the 7th semester once you are accepted. I wish you were right. In that case, JCKTTCWW gets the good news.

So, I’ve seen in some of the earlier threads (2011 to be precise) that people got accepted shortly after sending in their first semester grades. Does this mean that our deferrals don’t necessarily mean a 4 month wait, or is that information outdated?

Alright, I got the “good letter” aggressive anxiety for just 4 more months! :D

^Pillager

This is what i’m doing. As soon as I get back to school I’m snail-mailing my new grades to UofM, and then going from there. Don’t send in anything else unless you have something remarkable.

From what I’ve been reading, people have been receiving decisions once their applications have been updated. So i’m hoping for a late-January decision.

When do we start to hear back about deferrals? does anyone know about past years?

Optus, does your WA view credentials page now require you to provide 7th semester grades? Thx

There is no good or bad deferral letter. If you read through the whole thread from last year, the letter made no difference in how many people were eventually rejected or accepted.
