University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

Hi, can I ask you who did you send to? your admission counsellor or admission director (Erica Sanders)? thank you

@ferry The counselor that handled her high school. You can look the name up on the U of M admission page if you don’t know who it is.

@waitinggamemom Thanks for sharing. That’s how it worked for me too last year.

I sought out the U of M table out at our school’s college fair my junior year and made a point to meet the college admissions counselor personally, keeping in touch via email with questions as to how best set up my senior year classes to reflect a strong application.

My dad always told me networking was important - and so was eye contact. I went again to our school’s fair my senior year and thanked him in person for answering my questions, and to look for my application EA. When I was deferred, I sent him one last email - my LOCI.

Jan to April was a brutal waiting game, so I started making plans elsewhere (which would have been great too - so no pity party necessary). But in my heart, I knew it wasn’t over until any version of a final answer arrived - deny, admit, or waitlist. It was a long journey to get here on campus but I arrived on move-in day the same time the EA admits did. If you are deferred, don’t give up.

It’s not how fast you get here, It’s that you do.

Hey guys, I just want to acknowledge the advantage kids from highly-ranked or well-funded high schools have. A lot of people say that if you come from an extremely underfunded school with limited academic opportunities, you have an advantage in the admissions pool because you stand out. I honestly don’t believe this is true. Like in the above post, high schools who have college fairs that UMich attends have much better opportunities for networking. My high school is large, public, and extremely underfunded. Our average ACT score is a 21. The best college to visit my school was the University of Minnesota, our flagship college. The others were more targeted to the average student (someone with a 21 ACT and a 2.5 GPA). UMich has never come to a college fair, nor has any school at the same level. I definitely agree that networking is extremely important, and without a personal connection, a 34 ACT and a 4.2 aren’t going to get me very far. Does anyone have any advice on how to build connections? I asked my college and careers counselor to reach out, but she refused. I did email my admissions counselor to ask if an LOCI would be an effective way to convey my strong continued interest, and I’m pretty sure I just got the same response that others who have submitted formal LOCIs. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Why was I deferred??? I have a 4.3 weighted GPA and superb essay. Both of my parents went to Michigan as well as my grandparents. I am the captain of the varsity girls basketball team and have my own tutoring business. I tutor underprivileged kids in the inner city. I am a Latino and other was accepted into other schools like Wisconsin and Montana State. On my ACT I got a 22 but that’s the only weak part of my applicantation. Can someone pls tell me why I got deferred?

Yeah, the 22 probably killed you

@geniuswithaj36 you have a 0% chance of admission

gpa dropped from 3.71 to 3.69 cuz of senior grades…can i not send them my grades? do i have no chance?

@geniuswithaj36 you’ve got to be kidding. Let me throw this back at you. How can you reasonably expect to be accepted to an elite world renown University such as Michigan with only a 22 ACT??? The 2016-17 Common Data set indicates that the bottom 2% of the freshman class has scores lower than 23 on the ACT. The mid 50% range is between 29-33 (and for out-of-state the mid range is even higher). Your ACT score is one of the most important parts of the application. If both your parents and grandparents went to Michigan then presumably you have --and indeed are expected to have–the resources to adequately prepare (I.e. Test prep. course, tutoring, guide books such as the ACT Red Book, etc…) for the most important test in your life. Yoir pseudonym for CC indicates you are a genius with a 36—so clearly you did not study and prepare adequately if you scored 22.

Do you think that getting a B in AP physics and possibly a B(waiting for final) for AP Calc BC(1 and 2) would be detrimental for my chances of admission?

Maybe. Both are tough classes. Definitely still send your grades, at the very least it displays continuing interest.

I feel confident about an A in calc but if worst comes to worst hopefully it won’t make a difference in the decision. I have All As in my other APs though

My S’s school uploaded his first semester transcript on the 10th and they downloaded it on the 11th and it has been updated on Wolverine access. Anyone know if they will wait a while before they start reviewing the deferred applicants or will they start looking at them as and when they get the grades in?

Who do I send my LOCI to?

Your regional counselor, not whoever sent you your decision

There is no option for me to send my first semester grades. Should I just wait for my counselor to send out mid year transcripts? I have already paid for mine.

Any thoughts on when first round of deferred decisions may come out?

You do not send your grades; your GC does.

@skieurope I asked my GC to send my first semester grades to the colleges I applied to, and he said he didn’t know how :frowning: My solution was to send my transcript through Parchment again, which includes my midterm grades. Do you think that will be sufficient?

No, particularly since you are an international applicant. With past instances of less-than-forthright international applications being submitted, one should assume that colleges will scrutinize such applications for impropriety. Don’t open yourself up to that type of scrutiny.

I assume that your GC is a college graduate, and is therefore capable of reading and following the instructions. When all else fails, he can send the document through the mail or he can contact the college for acceptable alternative means of sending.
