are there “good” and “bad” deferral messages?
Hi I was deferred and im shocked because I was sure I was going to be denied. I have a 3.83 UW and 1160 SAT… Does anyone know if they just defer people like if they haven’t gotten to their application?? I genuinely think its impossible they would have wanted to admit me eventually given the fact I have an 1160 SAT and have taken no APs my entire high school career!
Got deferred from Engineering. Had a 3.85 UW and a 32 ACT. Honastly no real clue why I got deferred, but it seems that a LOT of people got deferred and not a lot of people actually got accepted EA. I keep reading about letters of continued interest, who do we send those too?
Your Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) should be short and sweet. Express your interest and intent to attend if admitted. Add one or two things you’ve accomplished since your EA application (or Nov 1) that enhances your prior application - not necessarily out-of-the blue additional info. Mention the strength of your 7th semester grades and when they can expect them (or if they have already been submitted).
As far as when to send? Picture yourself in their shoes. Chances are they will be leaving on holiday shortly and when they return, their inbox will be inundated; you will be back to being one in 30,000 again. Pick a day when they might have some time between back-to-school and the next application deadline.
And don’t forget about your digital presence. Clean it up, load it up. Make yourself searchable so they find local newspapers with your name in the paper, or school newsletters that mention your accomplishment or participation, or an Instagram, FB, twitter account that visually brings to life those things that were in your application.
Be careful what you wish for: If you think this process is daunting, wait until your first semester at UofM (says the person who just wrapped his first round of Wolverine college exams. LOL)
Is there a specific email we send those to? I haven’t gotten any email yet, just looked at my portal.
@rebecca62 I’m guessing you indicated an uncommon field of study in your LSA app? Or you hail from an under-represented high school or region?
Sometimes the people with high stats end up denied because there are simply too many people applying with the same interest of study, and holistically, didn’t have a strong enough story that set them apart. If you think that is the case, fix that in your LOCI.
@sandre1 Good and bad deferral messages were debated ad nauseam last year. I had what the consensus deemed “bad” … but got in. I wouldn’t put too much thought into it or you will be exhausted come April.
Mine asked for the mid-Feb grades too but it doesn’t say second notification it just says notification. Has anybody who gotten accepted seen this under view credentials?
Deferred from college of engineering. 33 ACT and 4.3 GPA (W) , What are we supposed to do for LOCIs?
Does deferral typically mean denial by the final, regular decision? Or do a lot of early action deferrals get accepted in the end?
I got deferred, which honestly kind of shocked me. I have a 33 ACT, which is quite literally the only objective flaw of my application. I have a perfect GPA, taking the hardest classes at my school, lots of ECs that I am committed to, strong LoRs, and good essays. I’m even 3rd generation legacy. But such is life, I guess. Time to move on to finishing up all my regular decision applications.
@trevian442 got the same one
“The most successful candidates send us only what we require.” - pulled from my deferral letter. What is this supposed to mean? I feel like it’s discouraging me from sending a LOCI but idek.
would it be cheesy to send a handwritten note for the LOCI with pictures of me in michigan gear when i was young
also if someone is calling on my behalf who was has major significance to Michigan help me?
Deferral simply means your application will be reviewed again in the RD round. It is by no mean a denial. Over 80% of EA applicants got deferred in recent years and there are approximately the same number of RD applicants added to the pool by the Feb 1 deadline. Ultimately, around 3/4 of application got rejected at the end.
UMich does not defer a student because of high stat or OOS status. Most applicants have high stat anyway. Basically, high stat does not guarantee admission, particularly if you show lack of interest in your application. UMich is no safety for anyone. Consider the >80% deferral rate, many of them would have high stat too.
Last, don’t waste your time on speculating which version of deferral letter you got. It does not matter. Your letter of continue interest and school performance would be much much more important.
@billcsho So I still have a decent chance? Not a far-off shot in the dark chance, but a legitimate chance? That makes it sting a bit less.
@MathsAre(Not)Fun Yes, you are still in the game. Keep you grades high and ask the GC to send in mid year report. Send in a letter of continue interest as well but don’t be too pushy.
Should I send in my SAT subject test scores? Do they even care about that?
I would imagine this is bad news but what if my mid-year grades aren’t that good should I still send them or will it hurt more than it helps… I thought I had a really good shot and then i got deferred, not 100% surprised but still pretty upset.
Deferred from the school of nursing with a 32 gpa and a 3.85 uw. A little surprised since I’ve seen people get into nursing with lower stats. I’ve also visited Michigan twice (I’m from NY) and have sent my regional director couple emails about my interest. I just sent a LOCI over email to her. Very short and sweet. Sooo many people are deferred EA though, so I don’t think any of us should be too worried There is definitely still hope!
Also, I don’t see in my credentials a box for mid-year grades. Should I still send them even though they’re not as great as the rest of my high school grades?
